Lucas' Journal - Entry 1
Stars. The night sky is full of them. Twinkling gracefully in that endless, black abyss. They're almost like tiny rays of hope in an otherwise bleak world. Well, at least some people might say that. Personally, there isn't a single thing I would change about this world I live in. It's beautiful. Everywhere you look there is a new, unexpected scene just waiting to greet you.
Most people can't understand how I'm so positive. My older brother is more what people expect. After all, we are orphans. My parents died when I was only young so I can't really remember them. Still though, there are a few memories that remain. Like sometimes when my brother talks, his voice reminds me of Dad. But the strongest memory I have is of my Mother. There are days, during the summer, when the weather is just right, the smell of river bark brings back a lovely comforting feeling. It smells fresh and gentle, just like Mother.
Gentle. Now there's a word to describe my little sister. I'm not that much older than her but, well, 2 years is 2 years. She's a great kid, fun and caring, but that doesn't mean she's totally innocent. She's always getting into trouble. Little, clumsy things. Just the other week she nearly got trampled by a herd of Tursolos. I don't think she'll be trying to sneak up and sketch them anytime soon.
None of the villagers could blame her though, Tursolos are really fascinating animals. They have antlers with tiny stands of skin between them. It's very rare you see the strands though, most of the time they are covered in water, storing rainfall in case of a drought. In our village though that's very unlikely. We live in Ferlond, a small place surrounded by thick, lush forests. It's full of wildlife. We found a lost Tursolos fawn once. That was only a month or so old but its scales were already developed, and its antlers were more like bubbles of floating water.
Wish we could have kept him, but, being the oldest of us, Jak said we weren't allowed. Nina cried for days after that. But she quickly got over it. Her latest thing is that she seems obsessed with the Star Shines, or Zodiac as she sometimes calls it. Apparently there are 12 of them, but I don't believe in that kind of thing. The lodge is covered with sheets of notes and sketches. She actually went so far as to make a map of where she thinks one of these 12 things is. Convenient that it's just beyond where anyone in the village has gone before. She'll soon forget about it all, there's a new kid who just move here from the town to the west with his parents. Something is definitely going on between those 2.
I don't really like the kid, he's my age but he always seems so dark and quiet, like he's always thinking I'm an idiot. I try to talk to him from time to time out in the fields but so far I've had no luck.
