Loose

Do not be surprised
if the floorboard in the pantry
is not nailed down at one end
and when you go to fetch flour
for your pecan scones
the pressure of your foot
makes it rise like a rake handle
and break your ugly nose.

I was surprised -
firstly, because the initial batch of scones
went bad (the pecans blackened
and I used too much mustard powder)
and secondly, because when I went to fetch
flour from the pantry
I found Izzy, my daughter, face to face
with a floorboard, the head
of a nail through her eye.
The floor was covered with broken biscuits.
