Country Kids, Those

We shrieked and ran
in twilight hours
trampling sometimes
unseen flowers
hoping parents
wouldn't say
"To the car,
we're on our way".
Fun with cousins,
dogs and cats
grandpa's barn
housed gritty rats
somber shadows
would never fail
to scare us witless
head to tail.
Water from the
well was cold
in our thirst
like solid gold
the biscuits taken
from grandma's hand
revealed a love
we could understand.
Those country kids've
now gone away
but each remembers
our country play.
