“Just look at the joker in his sports-car, Doll!  Can’t he see the road’s flooded?  It certainly won’t do his soft-top a bunch of good.  That Range Rover geyser’s not even slowed down; talk about making waves!   Bloody four-wheel drives are everywhere these days, carving up the countryside with their off-road capers. Middle Wallop used to be such a quiet little village. White van man’s trying his luck now; one goes – they all go!  No more sense than they were born with.  Bet you anything you like each one of the blighters will end up in the drink!”  
 
“I don’t bet...you know that, Ramsay.  Mind you, I can empathise; they only want to get home for their teas – much as we do.  More trouble than they’re worth though – cars.  The good Lord gave us legs, so why they spend half their lives in those claustrophobic, metal boxes is a mystery to me.  Ere, Ramsay...is your tummy rumbling? Mine is.”
 
“Like crazy, Doll!  I’m famished; oodles of nosh a stone’s throw away.  I’m going to put my head down – make a dash for it, flood or not!”
 
“That’s just typical of you, Ramsay. You think with your stomach instead of your brains. Risk it then, but you’re on your own, kid.  I’d rather be hungry than history
and anyway, I’ve got a phobia about water, you know I have.  It plays havoc with my curls.”   
 
“Please yourself.  Say look, Doll!  The four-wheel drive’s actually made it. Well I’ll be blowed!  Let’s take the bull by the horns, as they say.  I’m starving. Grub – here I come!”
 
“On second thoughts, wait for me, Ramsay! I’ve changed my mind, as is a female’s prerogative.”
 
“Come on then, old girl.  Tread carefully.  It’s not as deep as it looks.  I can only hope we don’t develop foot-rot with all this water around; although I think it’s been worth it, everything considered.  The grass does look much greener in this field...don’t it love?  Only...do take a dekko behind us, Dolly.  There’s a load of cars braving it now and just to think – they’ve got the nerve to call us lot sheep!”
 
“I know, Ramsay; ain’t it typical?  Baaaaaa to the lot of ‘em!”

Hi Tina

I loved this - especially the end. You disguised them very well, but only a second read, I found out the clues that you carefully put in.

My son had a friend from Middle Wallop - and went to spend a week with him once.

Hi Tina,

you had me in the dark right up to the end,  then I had a smile on my face  smiley  for the originality of this skilful read.

Funnily enough we had lamb yesterday and after reading this story again like your first reader,  I laughed and really saw the funny side to it.

I don't know if you are familiar with the song (hymn) that gives this crazy story its title, well this is a rather moving version of it...if you're interested.

I used to sing it in our choir at school, and it has always been special to me.  It was written by a Hugh S Roberton, the man who founded the Glasgow Orpheus Choir.

Thanks for sharing the youtube video Tina,  I've never heard the hymn before,  but It's nice to be able to look back and remember such a special memory,  of singing this moving piece in the chior and I can see how it inspired you.   it was your original style that made the story.

Play's havoc with my curls - know how frustrating that wet wool feels. This is great, TIna, really gave me an unexpected laugh at our ridiculous society and made me long to be one, if only for a day.   Glad I don't eat such witty characters myself, the rest of you should be bloody ashamed.
