So dawn goes down today.
Nothing gold can stay.
Robert Frost
If you get this letter,
please – see it as a promise;
a robin in a leafless forest –
a wave on a long-becalmed sea.
A box of paints, and a brush
in excited little hands.
This letter
is a patchwork square
of hope...the deepest
shade of night
framed by a branch
on which a star
is sewn – sequin bright
shivering away
for it must shine its last
tonight.
This letter
is the sound
of cannons –
unexploding...
the telegram
that stays unsent...
of birdsong
on a Chertsey
mid-May morning
in a never-ending dawn.
Of Robert Frost – getting
it wrong;
this letter – proof
that some things gold
do stay.
It is the silence - follows
the saying of a prayer
and the peace
you found there,
it’s a white, luna moth
emerging from its cradle
to touch a distant light..
