Fear of Falling

Lying on my back
in the orchard,
watching the clouds
standing still
whilst I, lazily,
drift on by.
I hear a hollow thump;
over ripened plums
fall, one by
one, by one.
The zealous ones.
The ones feasted upon
by wasp and hornet;
the too eager to be picked ones
end up rotting here; hidden,
by the marsh and meadow foxtail.
The fallen; easily forgotten.
Bloated and bruised;
fodder for crows to pick over
and maggots to devour.
I imagine how they feel;
those for whom perfection
comes and goes, unnoticed.
Yet still they fall; each one
only once, but their kind
again and again...

I like this. Takes something
I like this. Takes something very natural and then spirals off into what life is about - all 'those for whom perfections comes and goes, unnoticed' (great line). A little like Edward Thomas' Addlestrop poem when a single birdsong becomes every bird in that place. And (in the sense of unnoticed things) something like a rather nice passage in the (fairly wierd at times) book of Job where God talks about sending rain on deserts where no one has ever been. Something like that. Nicely full of meaning (to me anyway). Rob

This is brilliant, Tina! I too was going to mention Thomas's 'Adlestrop' having studied it rather thoroughly for my English AS! I love the whole analogy of the plums - very clever, and I'm sure everyone can take some meaning from it! Well done ;)

Really powerful exciting poem.
First my brain thought fallen of war?
But this brilliant a great poet.
Very hectic,time over Volcano eruption
and daughter and son in law couldn't go
Spain.As planned,ends up back at work,
hope to fly his realtion and Aunt Sat;
But he's mine had bad back 3 weeks
now up back at snooker!then bowls coming
up,not what I say?
Messages daughter,no replies,only days
I know,then he sends text hate,can't work,
all three tell different version, or no me
at all.So had enough and clear of alone walk.
Cn you telle me what is the difference between
a conversation and talk,I am told I don't make
conversation,when they are to-gether and I am interrupted if I speak.
I love all about the fallen plums etc;
now re-tried IP Tony Editor kindly commented
and liked bits,try again.
Off for a walk.No arguments,to old now.
Can't ever be right.
Hope your well.
Mobiles I hate,I wouldn't have one.
Mine won't evemn take me or shopping
where is to-getherness.
It seems chatting!days taken out
only apply to some.
Even an x work pal he'd go out drink
and chat!not in my days times changed
presents jewelly cheap,not mean't say
how nice a thing for the three worked with.
Why not writing set or something.
just off catch later.
Can't make out what do wrong sometimes.
All self to-day.Necks improving tired.
Hope your well
I used to "Astral" fly
brilliant,one never lands?
It's an escapement if afraid I think!.

I really enjoyed this, some stunning imagery in my opinion.
I particularly enjoyed this stanza;
I imagine how they feel;
those for whom perfection
comes and goes, unnoticed.
