Just Another Poem

Glimpse the shadow
of a passing cloud
chase the sun
across a cornfield
and beyond the furrowed hills
that fringe my world;
the transience of it all
making it even more beguiling.
Planting a row of seeds
in regimented line –
notice a rose caught
in a stranglehold of bindweed;
on my knees give it back
its dignity. Display it
to its best advantage.
A control freak, that’s me
through and through.
That’s what you always said
and that’s why I write –
wrote about you
and your battle with cancer.
Truly, I would sacrifice
the last pen, the last scrap of paper
to tell you, you were right.
Glancing upwards, I watch
a Red Kite; not so long ago
an endangered species, now
riding high on the thermals
and I’m up there too...
looking down,
equating my chances
in an uncertain future.
Imagining an endless blue –
a forest full of trees
with a million
empty branches...
Bringing order to chaos –
at least trying to.
Writing a poem,
as I always do.
