Lilac Wine

Breathless,
one Springtime
at the top of a hill,
a blameless blue sky –
her skin, smooth as silk;
halcyon days –
a brief moment in time...
strawberry fairs
and sweet, lilac wine
lectures and lechers –
varsity balls...crumby,
cramped lodgings
in all-hallowed halls
falling in love
at the drop of a hat –
roll-ups and reefers
and post-coital chats.
She’s filing her nails –
he builds castles in Spain...
tells her he loves her...
she laughs in his face.
Breathless, one Springtime
at the top of a hill,
a blameless blue sky...
yet Winter came, still.
