Walking down Petticoat Lane
in days of yore – kids in tow,
just passing Tubby Isaac’s stall
with his famous jellied eels,
when the eldest pipes up,
 
“Gosh – Mum, Dad! What’s he done?” 
 
“What’s who done?” we wondered.
 
“Look!  In that window it says,
Bill Stickers will be prosecuted.”
 
Took us a while to fall in –
then we did; big style.
 
Another memorable occasion,
it was the younger daughter’s turn;
thirteen, and a budding Mrs. Malaprop.
A family meal in the Beijing Palace,
and the waiter says to her,
 
“Miss, can I pour you some water?”
 
“No thanks,” she answers, “or maybe
 just a scrotum.”  
 
“Would that be sparkling or non, Miss
and perhaps...a smidgeon of ice?”
 
“Never mind, babe,” her dad whispers
as she turns a redder shade of beetroot –
tears in her eyes. “We all make mistakes
even me. Except mine, are cleverer
than yours.”

Nice to remember these family and funny incidents. I feel all such malapropisms I've heard have comepletly gone from my mind, but maybe some will come back. I do remember one of my sons who was reading quite early asking, with bewilderment why there was a big notice saying 'Take Away' in Marks, and why in a particularly cold spell in December or January the TV screen said ' Weather Forecast – Tommorrow's Summery'  (summary)!

When I got to the second remark I burst out laughing. I felt sorry for her, but can't help thinking that from now on, I will use that exact phrase whenever I'm offered a drink top-up. Love it!

It is quite a classic, isn't it?smiley  We'd just been to see 'Chorus Line' , and apart from the show being memorable, this made it even more so.  Those were the days, right enough.

Hi Tina, I see that you have pipped me to the post. Isn't it amazing the things kids come up with? I have a recollection of a few classics. Mind you, given the complexity of the English language it's not surprising that slips of the tongue occur even among adults. Guilty as charged m'lud. But then I am a foreigner. Congratulations on the cherries.

Good afternoon, dear Luigi, and I quite agree with what you say about those slips of tongue, both young and old, experience from time to time.  Goodness knows how many I'd have, if I ever managed to master that lyrical mother tongue of yourssmiley Your English is so impeccable, I always forget that you are indeed  'a foreigner'.

Anyway, so pleased you like this, and that it brought back fond memories.

I know all those places and Tubby Isaacs but that second slip up was just hilarious.  I'm with Bee I want to use that expression.  I don't usually drink but I might just have a scrotum...seeing as it's you.

As you can imagine, it has become a family 'thing' at dinner.  She has never lived it down, bless hersmiley

So pleased you enjoyed, and it's been good to share.

Hope things are well with you.  My other half is painting the garage, so thankfully, one of his better days.  Mind you....at the moment he seems to have more white paint on himself than on the walls, and the old song 'When Father painted the ceiling...' keeps springing into my head.  I can't think whyfrown
