Saw the Beatles live,
at the Apollo, Hammersmith
in the swinging sixties
 
Dined at the Dorchester
Watched the sun go down
behind the north face
of the Eiger
 
Married Jim; had two kids
three gerbils, a stick insect
and a dog
 
Cleaned the house 
Baked fresh bread
Grew an aubergine
from seed
 
Buried one daughter
Learned to paint...courtesy of

Took the grandkids to Disney World
and their first ever, days at school
 
Made bedspreads, cloths and scarves
Quite the needlewomen me...
but only knitted in straight lines
 
Became a runner-up in Saturday’s
Telegraph Prize Crossword
Picked apricots fresh from the trees
along the banks of the Danube
 
Learned to ride a bike again
Endeavoured to master badminton;
pulled a ham-string.
 
Tried to ride a horse, but was thrown
twice...at least I got back on though
 
Never minded the thought of dying –
didn’t frighten me.  Why would it?
I’d see my daughter again
 
At seventy-three, not a bad innings
So don’t pity me. Could do with the respite, 
anyhow. It takes life to love Life, if 
you get my drift;
 
it’s through with me now, but
you’ve the rest of yours to live, 
so just make sure you do your damndest,
to pass it down

Such a matter of fact run through of a life -(so far), without an apparent opinion, leaving the reader to decide how to feel about the events, joyful, sorrowful. Such a mixture, even though one event overpowers the rest. I felt a positive hopefulness in this, and a passing on of experience. For some reason, this bit stood out for me - ' 

'but only knitted in straight lines

I loved the glint of humour.

As it's a whole life (so far), there really is everything in this poem, and that's what it made me feel - everything.

Yes...quite a life, as for all of us.  And as to my writing it helps me no end.  Not quite sure how I could cope, otherwise, as I am sure many of us on ABC will identify with.
