Dismal, dank and drizzly – 
dower January skies;
Put your Wellingtons on,
if you’re going outside!
I yell at my daughter
who’ll be four next week.
Don’t forget to shut the door,
and not to slam it, please!
 
I watch her in the garden 
as she bounces her ball.
For me, days like these 
seem to say it all, except
when you’re a kid 
you pay no heed to the weather
as rain deluges the lawn.
The more puddles, the better.
 
What I wouldn’t give
to see things through her eyes;
to live in her world –
so far removed from mine;
cup my hands, catch the raindrops; 
hunt for frogs by the pond,
dig for worms in the flowerbeds,
build a den in the copse...
 
instead, I hear me nagging.
Dinner’s ready – come indoors;
wipe your feet – take your boots off –
don’t walk mud on my floor!
Then, off to the bathroom –
wash your hands and your face,
and while we’re on the subject,
you’d better scrub those nails!
 
Got something for you, Mummy 
but you have to close your eyes!
Makes me promise not to peek, now,
or I’ll spoil the surprise – two
white, shiny stones, from the depths
of her pocket. I found pearls!
triumphantly, she tells me.
Who am I to tell her
she's wrong?

You've captured The Nag Monster's anxiety and the child's fantasy world all in one. Also, how one small gesture on a child's part is often what makes two spinning worlds come back together. That adult monologue for routine and responsibility is so tricky to fight off and it's conveyed so elegantly here. The last stanza made a pearl-like lump in my throat!

Hi Tina,

this is one of those poems that I'm sure many a parent can relate too.  That all too familiar voice that makes us mothers what we are.  Caring and sharing in the joys of a childs world and yet wishing we could go back to a time when life was as laid back as our childs.

Oh for those memories.
