The poor child was so scared as she crawled out from the scrub, it was as if she was in a void of bewilderment. Looking around, she felt confused. She stared up at the sky, clouds were building and it looked like rain would fall soon.
She had never thought about the weather before, but here out in the open, alone and not having any idea where she was, it became her biggest worry.
Getting to her feet, she felt so shaky, her heart beating fast as she brushed the dirt from her clothes. Luckily her mother had dressed her in warm clothing that morning.
She felt a relief that she was wearing her fur lined boots, that would keep her feet warm and dry. She wore a sheep skin cape over her deer skin top and trousers.
Pulling the hood on the cape up over her head, she stared back along the dirt road they had driven along, thinking it would be a good idea to start following the tracks of the wheels.
As she walked, a fine drizzle of rain started to fall, she pulled her cape further in around her. Realising how thirsty she was, she raised her head, closing her eyes, squinting, then she opened her mouth, but the rain wasn't hard enough to get a proper drink, but at least it wet her dry mouth and refreshed her.
The road was quite stony, for many wagons had passed along this way. It was a through road, which took the wagons South, in order to barter their wares and also, to get as far away from the North as possible, during the bad blizzards of the winter.
Only the really hardened people would stay here during those bleak times. Anise and her family had never left the North during the winter. Her mother and father made houses of snow, and kept warm with their thick sheep and bear skins. The many bears that roamed in the winter, would not be bothered by the snow, for their coats kept them warm, even in bad blizzards, they would even sleep in the snow, sheltering where ever possible as did the people too.
Anise looked off to her left, she saw some sheep grazing and stared wide eyed at them, thanking the sheep for their warm coat that she now wore. As the rain became harder, she was aware that the wheel tracks, were no longer visible, but she carried on walking anyway. Suddenly Anise came to a fork in the road, she had no idea which way to go, the wheel tracks by now, had completely disappeared, leaving muddy puddles.
Clutching her cape further in around her again, the hood almost covering her face, she wished there was some sort of shelter, but it was open land and there were no trees, just bushes on either side of the road.
She thought about her parents and how worried they would be, then the tears began to fill her eyes, as she wondered of the brothers fate. Thoughts went through her mind, why did those men want her friends? How could adults be so cruel? She'd always thought the world was a safe place, but now she wasn't so sure.
The wildness of her surroundings, overwhelmed Anise, she found herself crying like she'd never done before, but then all of a sudden a movement in some bushes caught her attention, she was still sobbing as she watched and waited for whatever it was to appear, too afraid to move.
