Safe Journey Blackbird

It's now early November
and still late roses bloom,
in between leaves holding
onto life like they have no
intention of going anywhere,
so I scatter some fallen
rose petals at your grave
remembering how daily
you'd chirp out a song,
curious little fellow I
was aware you could
see me with those large
gazing eyes with yellow
rings surrounding which
were aware of everything.
I'd throw onto grass,
seeds – fruit pellets
and nuts, you were
more interested in
turning stones onto path,
picking up leaves with
your bright yellow beak,
flicking here and there
like you hadn't a care,
searching for important
juicy earth worms or insects,
enjoying generating a mess.
I never minded you
were so entertaining,
especially when in the
birdbath, ruffling feathers,
splashing and creating a
shower for blue tits and
sparrows to stand under.
Now as you rest silently
I recall that day some cat
must have caught sight
of you stopped your
beating heart and
sent your spirit away,
so little one as I stand
here over your grave,
hope you're at peace,
let your soul fly as I
say my goodbye.

Ah, sad Jenny. I love
Ah, sad Jenny. I love blackbirds. You're right, they always seem very curious. Luckily my cat only seems interested in rats and mice, I'd be very upset if he caught a songbird. We get really attached to our garden visitors, I think, and your poem conveys that well. :)

Jenny I'm so sorry you lost
Jenny I'm so sorry you lost your blackbird. It is aweful to find your garden friend like that. Blackbirds seem to fill the garden with joy through their songs and their busy ness. How you describe your blackbird in your 5th stanza is perfect, important worms! I love that :0) Hopefully he/she passed quickly and their spirit will go into the life force of your garden to help all the birds and insects that will come to visit you in the future

My favourite bird of all - I
My favourite bird of all - I also have a resident family in my garden. Isn't their song the most beautiful thing? Better than the nightingale. A little gem of a poem - simple and touching, thank you!

Hi Jennie
Hi Jennie
How lovely this is - and very emotional about a bird whom most of us only vaguely appreciate from a distance.
