Chapter 2
Seth
“Hey… this means we can be roommates!” I said.
Dawn frowned and said, “Oh yah, that’ll be fun. I get to live with you till I get this place fixed up, or I should say, rebuilt.”
I patted her back. Her house had been burned to the ground. The Kithil had definitely got there revenge last night. They’d be after out necks soon enough again. Especially now that we killed two of their leaders.
As we searched through the rubble, Dawn found a note. It read;
“Surrender now and we’ll kill you quickly. Same goes for your boyfriend.”
“Hey, I’m your boyfriend? That’s too people in a row now. We should just call it quits and hitch up.” I said jokingly.
She smiled and said, “Over my dead body we will.”
We headed back to my place to discuss what we were going to do about out problem. I had suggested that we just kill the whole Vampire clan, but Dawn said that that would be impossible. We discussed moving, but they would be able to follow us. We could give ourselves up, but neither of us wanted to die. Overall, we hadn’t really gotten anywhere.
“Well,” Dawn started, “We could always just wait and see what happens.”
“We could, but I think we should be prepared too.” I put in.
“Of course, so these are the things we’ll need…” She had me running all over the place to find stuff that we might need. It was like preparing for a war. And it kind of was, except for the fact that it was like two against thousands.
When I finished gathering stuff, we started to set up my already very protected ‘base’. I was wicked tired and was taking a break as Dawn started to put things in crazy places. I watched her lazily as dusk started to hit.
“Hey, I gotta feed soon. I’ll be right back unless you want too…?” I said.
“No go out and chase those animals. Just be back quickly. They’ll probably be expecting that. You know what… here take this.” She handed me a water bottle filled with red liquid.
“Umm… What kind of blood is this?” I asked sniffing it suspiciously.
“It’s deer mixed with a little of mine. Just a little though. Try it.” She was just babbling on distractedly as she kept setting up.
“I guess I’m gonna have too,” I muttered under my breath.
“Huh?” She asked distracted still.
“Nothin’,” I said as I chugged down the foul tasting blood. Dawn’s blood was only a seasoning. It barely made the deer taste better. I sighed and made a face.
“What, you don’t like it? Well I have some fox that you can try tomorrow…” She said as she started to clean up the mess she had created.
“Hey Dawn, relax. You’ve been working as hard as I have. Take a break.” I said and took the plate she held out of her hands. “I can help clean too.”
She sighed in relief, “Thanks. This is wicked stressful.” She sat down at the kitchen table and I put the plates in the cabinets. What was she doing with the plates? I was going to ask her but when I turned around she was fast asleep. I smiled and laid her on the bed. It was a good thing I didn’t need to sleep. For her anyways.
I finished cleaning. It took about three minutes thanks to super human speed. Then I just sat and looked around. I watched Dawn sleep for a couple minutes. Then I turned the T.V. on. I flipped to a random sitcom but didn’t really watch it. I was thinking.
Then I heard a crash outside. Dawn sat up suddenly and said, “What was that?”
“I don’t know…” I got up and headed for the door.
“Don’t go outside! You’re safer inside!” Dawn said urgently. “You don’t know what’s out there. It’s probably a trap.”
I sat back down, “Ok. You’re probably right.”
We sat there for like twenty minutes and nothing else happened. Dawn was starting to nod off again. “It was probably an animal or something…” She said drowsily.
“Sure.” As she fell asleep, I stayed alert and waited. I didn’t think it was just an animal. I paced around the room a couple of times. Then I sat and watched the door. It went on like this for a couple of hours.
The next morning Dawn woke with a start. She looked around wildly until she spotted me lying on the couch. “Okay, you’re okay. Good. So what’ve you been doing?”
I smiled. I knew she cared about me on the inside. She just didn’t want to admit it.
“What?” She asked confused.
“Nothing… I’ve been watching lame shows on T.V. How’d you sleep?” I asked.
“Good…” She asked still suspicious.
“Hungry?” I asked.
Her stomach grumbled so I took that as a yes. I got up and cooked her some waffles. She ate them readily and we talked about movies. Ones we wanted to see, ones that were stupid, ones that were funny or sad…etc.
At like ten o’clock, we decided to go outside and see that whatever had made the crash last night, had left any clues of what it was. We went outside and it was definitely apparent what had made the crash. Dawn gasped and I laughed.
There were several piles of ashes on the ground. I guess that the Kithil had tried to get in last night. I laughed again. My barriers worked awesomely.
“Wow…” Dawn said.
I chuckled, “I’m surprised that after the first got toasted that the others just followed him and got toasted. Stupid vampires.”
“You do realize that you’re a vampire?” Dawn said, a smirk playing on here face.
“Yes… But I’m not a stupid vampire.”
She laughed, “Come on. We’re going to need to clean this up.”
So for the next twenty minutes we cleaned up piles of ashes. I felt like we’d been cleaning too much lately. I sighed as we finished. There was a lot of ash. Even with super humanness, it still took forever.
“Okay, we’re done,” Dawn said. She held a dust pan in her hand filled with the last pile of vampire ash. Then, a giant gust of wind blew the ash and she was covered in it.
“Eew… I’m covered in vampire remains,” She coughed and I laughed as we tried to dust her off. We got most of it off and then she went inside to change. I waited patiently outside. After twenty minutes though, I went back inside to see what the hold up was.
“Yo, Dawn? How long does it take to get dressed?” I said as I entered the kitchen. I didn’t get an answer back and started to get worried. I knocked on her door, “Dawn you in there?”
No answer. I turned the knob but it was locked. “I’m coming in!” I said and broke down the door. I gasped when I saw her frozen, standing in front of her closet. She was wicked pasty colored and her eyes held a kind of surprised look. I ran over to her and shook her shoulders, “Dawn! Dawn!”
Still no response. Then it hit me. She had inhaled the ash. If it had been just plain vampire ash she would have been fine. Dammit! We had been set up. I needed to get it out of her. I laid her on the bed and started to do mouth to mouth.
“One, two, three………One two three………… One two three…………”After the third or fourth time she coughed out a big cloud of dust. I held my breath. And vacuumed it up.
“You okay?” I asked.
“Yup… What happened exactly?” She asked.
“Well, I uses that that ash was really freezing powder, so when you inhaled it, you got frozen. I came in here to see what was taking you so long and found you frozen in front of your dresser. I did some mouth to mouth and here you are now, perfectly fine.”
She sighed, “Well at least you didn’t inhale it too. Then we would have been very screwed. I told you it was a trap last night. If you had been captured, that would be very, very bad.”
“Yah… Well, here we are, still perfectly healthy. Let’s go outside and breathe some healthy air too.”
We didn’t get back till dusk. We had gone out to the park, tried to find any remaining items in Dawn’s house and had gone out for ice cream. We had also run into her friend Clara again to which there was another wink as she left. I smiled contently as we entered my house.
“So…Did you have a good day today?” I asked.
“Yup, you?” She asked as she prepared dinner. I smiled again.
“Yup. I like your friend Clara.” I said a smirk on my face.
She eyed me suspiciously, “Why?”
“No reason, I just like her opinions.”
“On what?” Again very suspicious.
“You and me…”
She scowled angrily and returned to what she was cooking. She was making stir-fry and it smelled good. Too bad I wouldn’t be able to eat it.
“What’s my dinner?” I asked changing the subject.
“That.” She pointed to a glass of red on the table.
“Fox?”
She nodded and I went to sit at the table. Hopefully it would taste better than the deer.
I couple of seconds later she sat down across from me and began eating. Twenty minutes later she said, “Why do you do this to me?”
I sighed, I knew what she meant, “Because, whether you like it or not, I love you.”
“Well then don’t love me. Go away.”
“So that my life could be drama-less and so that I can’t harass you anymore?”
She smiled and said, “Your right about the drama. I wish that those people would leave me alone. I killed Lucas for a good reason. He had killed my whole family, along with countless other, not to mention the ones he was going to kill. Then he was going to kill me. It was only fair. And now there after you because you killed Rowan.”
“Hey, some day they’ll forget and you’ll be free. Maybe we’ll just kill them all. We’ve killed two leaders as it is. That’s like ten of them put together. We will get through this.”
She smiled at my optimism and said, “Thanks. I just wish I wasn’t so useless.”
“Hey… You aren’t useless. You are very talented.” I said re-encouragingly.
“You know what I mean.” She said.
I sighed, “Yeah so? We could do it my way.”
“No way! That would leave you with out a blood supply… Not t mention I don’t want to be tied to you that way.” She said as she became suddenly interested with her fork.
I smiled. I would get through to her yet.
Then there that smash again from the night before. I jumped to my feet and so did Dawn. We heard a loud knock and a voice said, “We’ve got your friend Clara! We’ll kill her if you don’t come out this instant!”
I heard Dawn gasp.
I turned to her and grabbed her shoulders, “It’s a bluff! Believe nothing you hear! Not even if it sounds like her!”
Just on cue, a scared Clara like voice said, “Dawn! Please help me!”
Dawn looked scared. I knew she wanted to go out there.
“Dawn listen to me. It’s not Clara.”
She looked at me and said, “How do you know?”
“I have an alarm and the same protection around her house. I knew something like this was going to happen, so I became cautious.”
She smiled and hugged me, “Oh! Thank you!”
“No problem.”
Then another loud knock. “You have thirty seconds to get out here and surrender or we’ll come in there and get you!”
Dawn became serious again, “Can they do that?”
I frowned, “They shouldn’t be able too, but they shouldn’t have been able to knock either. Unless of course they’re just throwing things at the door.”
“Is there another way out?”
I pointed to the window but said, “They’re probably surrounding the whole building. We are just gonna have to sit tight and hope they can’t get in.”
She nodded and started to grab some of the hidden weapons. She threw a gun to me along with a sword and dagger. I put them away into the holsters on my body. Dawn did likewise. Then we sat on the couch and faced the window and door.
“Three! Two! One!” Then a loud smack against the door. Dawn jumped slightly, but no further entry was attempted.
A few minutes later another smack hit the door, this time the door crumbled some. “They’re throwing rocks at the door! It’s going to give soon!” Dawn said.
“I know.” We both got up and got ready. Another loud bang and the door cracked. Then, one last crash and the door crumbled into pieces and thirty vampires came swarming into the room.
Everything was a giant blur, I along in it. The only thing that wasn’t a blur was Dawn. She was fighting futilely against people who were so much faster and stronger than she was. Then she was taken from behind.
“Dawn!” I shouted. But it was too late. We were being over powered. I tried to reach her but I was surrounded. As soon as I had turned away towards Dawn, something big smashed over my head and I blacked out.
