It had been coming. She saw me see her, and I saw her see me avoid her gaze. From then it was all cooked like a salmon fillet.

In the space of a few minutes we progressed from the eye avoidance game right up to staring right down the barrel of tomorrow.

Smiles were made, laughs were had. We both new it was absurd, but we both knew it was happening anyway.

For a few stops we had it all. Everything you can ever want was had, all performed with nothing more that two full sets of eyes.

And just as it had gone as far as a thing can go when nothing has happened...

Then her stop arrived.

And in the space of a few steps she was off and on her way out of my life forever. Stopping -- just for a moment -- to turn and look me straight in the eyes and say...
