Rayna stepped into the kitchen, and saw her mother desperately trying to get a hold of Maya.
She called her on her cellphone many times, but Maya did not answer.
As soon as she saw Rayna standing there, she immediately asked her,
"Would you happen to know the phone numbers of Maya's friends?"
Rayna responded,
"No, but I know where you can find them."
Rayna ran up the stairs to the left, and straight into Maya's room.
She started rummaging through her drawers until she found Maya's address book,
She picked it up, and ran back into the kitchen.
Once there, she handed it to Mariya, and watched as she quickly called everyone in the book.
Unfortunately, no one had seen her since school.
"Where's Dad?"
Asked Rayna.
"He's gone out searching for Maya."
Answered Mariya.
Thirty minutes later, Antanas was home, but without Maya.
He could not find her anywhere.
Antanas brought back with him fast food because no one had eaten since lunch time, and
no one was in the mood for cooking.
It was now 9:32 PM, and Maya still had not come home.
Mariya was nearly in tears, fearing the worst.
Rayna tried calling her once more, and this time, she answered...
"Where are you, Maya?
Are you alright?"
Asked Rayna.
"I'm alive, if that's what you're asking."
You really need to come home.
Mom is freaking out, and Dad is really angry."
"I'm not coming home tonight, so please, tell them not to wait up for me."
"Where are you?"
"I'm safe.
Listen, I might not be home for a few days.
I need to clear my head for a while."
You have to come home.
It's not safe with that murderer on the loose."
"I will be fine.
Please tell Mom and Dad not to worry."
"Rayna, please.
I'm sorry for what happened earlier.
Just come home.
You don't have to speak to me."
"It's more than just that, Rayna.
I can't say anything else.
I just need to be alone now."
Mariya got up, and lip-synced to Rayna,
"Let me talk to her."
"Maya, Mom wants to talk to you."
Maya hung up the phone before Mariya had a chance to speak with her.
"Is she coming home?
Rayna, what did she say?"
Asked Mariya.
"She said that she needs to clear her head, and will not be home for a few days.
She claims that wherever she is, she's safe."
Answered Rayna.
"Oh, my God."
Exclaimed Mariya as she slowly walked towards Antanas.
"Are you sure that she didn't mention to you where's she at?"
Asked Antanas.
"No, she didn't.
I told you everything I know."
"You better not be covering for her."
Shouted Antanas.
Rayna returned to her room.
She could no longer listen to her parents.
She believed that if it were her that was gone, everyone would celebrate instead of panicking.
Rayna was never one to think positive about anything.
She put all of her time and energy into her school work.
Even though her essay wasn't due until the end of the week, she stayed up late working on it,
trying to forget about the bad things that were in her life.
***
Mariya and Antanas were lying in bed together.
Antanas tried everything in his power to make Mariya feel better, but it was no use.
She was convinced that she would never see her daughter again.
