Astonishing read. Better, much better, than Pan. The detail and imagination in this. And the key thing: the execution. Superb.

This seems trivial, but maybe worth mentioning for flow. The engineer has just scuttled over to the wall:

"...flipped open a panel set in the wall"

Stop at "panel"?
