Right now, there is a very tense situation in Korea. North Korea has been building a nuclear program and South Korea, Japan, and China are very nervous. Can these East Asian nations handle the problem themselves or does the US need to be involved?
On the one hand, it was a South Korean President who seriously and truly believed that the North and the South would one day become one... it was this very president, please excuse me if I don't remember his name, yes it was this very President that gave tons of monetary aid to North Korea, thinking it would go to the people who needed it. North Korea's leader Kim Il Song used this money to start the nuclear program.
This South Korean President's approach was naive and driven by the daydream of reunification.
What is the current approach? What is the mature approach?
Every 5 or 6 years, the North Korean Dictator, Kim Jong Il, threatens the world by telling them that he has a nuclear bomb and is willing to use it on South Korea. South Korea becomes very frightened and so does Japan since North Korea hates Japan with a passion bordering on insanity. When I speak about this situation to my mother, she says with certainty that both South Korea and Japan give bribes to North Korea to try to calm down the childish Dictator, Kim Jung Il.
The North Korean Dictator escalates the tension by making more threats and a few incidents occur. The US comes in with the Big Stick, telling North Korea that if they war with South Korea, they war with the United States. North Korea, sooner or later, backs off.
The other option to the US being involved is one that makes the US very nervous. South Korea and Japan would develop nuclear weapons to defend itself against a possible nuclear attack from North Korea. And here, the US is worried more about a remilitarized Japan than anything else. In some senses, Japan was demilitarized and forced into a continued adolescence because Adult Japan meant Fascist Japan. During the continued adolescence, Japan was rapidly exposed to Western ideas and methods of handling problems.
