Faces 4

i went to a lecture on the Yom Kippur War a few days ago. I really love Israel. I used to love America, but much of my love for America has disappeared. I'm sick to death of fighting. I may as well just conform to a country in which the poor are going to be pushed out to the Atlantic Ocean. The rich need to get richer and they'll find some way of getting their tax money back. Besides, the whole entire pecking order is a joke. Despite all that Jews have done to make America great, Israel does not get much in return. What's the point of climbing up the pecking order when the pecking order changes according to political and economic circumstances all the time. And the new class-based pecking order, it's an import from Britain. You can expect the same kind of British seeming cluelessness expressed in portrayals of the British upperclass. Anyway, at the lecture, I was looking at the faces of Jewish-American women and they looked back at me. One face looked sorrowfully happy. It was a bright happiness filled with some sorrow. Israel won the war without help from America. But what was the political cost, I wonder? Could South Korea win the war with the North without US help? Yes we could. One face was as of stone and then lines. Nature forms lines in stone. Adrienne Rich face is also lined. Are these the faces of women who have absorbed the puritanical traditions of America and integrated it with their Jewishness. Gertrude Stein, J.D. Salinger. But what of the death threats. The death threats against J.D. Salinger, Woody Allen.... in the 50's was it or in the 1960's. But things have changed since then. Jew have become much more acculturated. Now, will their faces look like American faces? Does experience and personality make its marks on the face? One must beware of a completely blank face.
