If anger is the fuel of Brando's Method acting, this fuel will run out faster than God's grace. God gives us grace, but limits our supply. Brando's acting lives off anger... White Anger against White Men, White Women, White People. At one point in my life, Brando expressed all my anger at white people. If Brando was, at first, angry at his father, his mind now associates all fathers with his father and he becomes angry at all fathers, all white fathers. When his anger seems fully purged, Marlon will need alcohol to feed his Method craft once again. Then, alcohol will quickly erase his memory.
In another sense, anger could be Marlon's father. Marlon was born out of anger.
On the Waterfront. This is during his "Black and White" period. Marxism is good. Capitalism is evil. On the Waterfront. The Hollywood 10. World War II is over. Fascism has been defeated. Fascists are forgiven. Communism is the New Enemy. It didn't have to be this way. The US and the Allies could have been much more firm and just with the Fascists of Japan and Germany and created a new alliance with Russia and China. But we chose this path. History is freedom and all the stupid fucks who say that history is inevitable are just justifiying their choices.
So McCarthyites attack the Hollywood Jews, the 10 and try to get them to snitch on the other Jews who are Marxists. This is the subtext of On the Waterfront.
On the other hand, just because the McCarthyites are the wrong, that doesn't make the Marxists right. For minds like Stella Adler's, even Marxism may be a mean position to work out a more complicated, comprehensive politic.
I believe that, in the film, Marlon Brando does snitch. His position reflects the view of the director of the film, Elia Kazan. Elia Kazan snitches and he believed that he did the right thing, but what was the reward for his sacrifice? It wasn't much.
2 years earlier, Elia Kazan glorified the Marxist hero, Zapata.
