I don't think it was any coincidence that the music of the Monkees had a revival in the 1980's. A parody transfers the power of the Original as a double negation, diffusing meaning into structure.
What's so fascinating about 1980's Pop music is that it is a play on 1960's Pop. It is eerily Pop. Molly Ringwald was the IT girl then. She expressed Hippy sheek. Pretty in Pink is an attempt, albeit Romantic, it is an attempt to synthesize Marxist values with Capitalistic values. The song views this attempt as a form of transvestitism. The song reads, "Isn't she Pretty in Pink." Her name is Carolyn. She lives in a world in which "nothing is ever put straight." I interpret this in 2 ways. One way is straight as in moral. Another is straight as in heterosexual. She's a cross-dresser and she is easy. I won't go into the rest of the lyrics as it is very easy to interpret the rest.
So, in our neighborhood in Narberth, I felt the first sense of being American. I felt like I belonged to a country. South Korea was like a dream to me now. It was true that I had lived in Incheon and my childhood in Korea had been idyllic, but now, I felt like I belonged which was a new feeling. Before then, I had felt so alienated from this country.
