When I say that I lived in a predominantly Jewish community, I am not making a general comment about Jewish culture. I am speaking of what I perceive as Jewish culture and I am sure that my perception is littered with misconceptions. My mind does not see reality. My mind is a power structure which seeks to give meaning to reality by placing myself at the center of it. This shows how selfish I am. God should rightly be at the center.
THEN, I need to place the year, 1986, and the set of events at Narberth, Pennsylvania within the cultural history of the United States. In the 1970's, Anthony Burgess wrote that he believed that America was falling apart. Within the context of Rock and Roll, Music had become psychodelic. Pink Floyd is the major representative of 1970's music. It is very solipsistic and egoistic music. In one sense, America has always lived in a bubble. In another sense, America does have a soul and a national psyche that is derived from Europe.
In the 1980's, there was renewed optimism under Reagan. There was an active turning away from soul-searching music to more seemingly Pop oriented songs.
