Twilight
So we slipped down the back lane in the drizzle and the dark,
invisible in our new-found twilight,
and when we arrived, we were sieved into two seats,
side-by-side, alone in the packed auditorium.
You were a great date. We shared the jokes like children
share a bag of jelly babies and I shot
sidelong glances at you, intermittently, no, continually,
savouring the sight of you puckered with laughter
warm and reassured, but above all to sneak sly peeks
at you wearing your glasses, to see your chocolate
button eyes sparkle behind the lenses;
and as you relaxed, you uncurled like a mink in your seat
and you say you heard me whisper 'quintessence of dust'
beneath my breath, as his words made us both tremble
as if moved by some low frequency.
When we came out of the dark together,
back into our twilight, we remarked that the
night was still young
as were we.
