A car horn was blaring. James, the driver, was not the type of guy who tolerates people slowing him down, and Sammie was the kind of person who would do whatever he could to annoy people who annoyed him first. He was doing it now by being late.
"Hurry up, man! Get in the fucking car!"
"I'm coming, I'm coming! Jeez, chill the fuck out."
"Sam, just get in the car before he fucking kills you!"
Nicole, Sammie's girlfriend, was the only reason he was going to the concert. She liked a few songs by the headlining band, Bring Me The Horizon, and when James said he had two extra tickets she thought she might as well go. She was dragging Sammie along because she just wanted him to be there with her.
Sammie finally got in the car, a slightly dirty, silver, four door Nissan Altima. He was sitting in the back with Nicole. Already riding shotgun was their Tyler, James' brother.
James was the oldest of the group, being eighteen and a half. He had naturally black hair, but it was bleached to the point of being nearly white at the tips. It was cut fairly short in the back, but the front would look like a waterfall covering his face if he didn't part his bangs so that only the left side was covered. He was incredibly thin, and Sammie often joked that he was afraid of getting a paper cut if they touched.
Sammie was the second oldest, having turned eighteen just a few weeks before. He was the tallest, being six-foot even. He had blonde hair, and the way he wore it was often compared, much to his annoyance, to Justin Bieber's style. He had a piercing on the left side of his lower lip, which he hated when he first got, but later decided he loved.
Nicole was the youngest in the group, being sixteen and a few months. She was five-three, though told everyone she was half an inch taller to make herself feel better. She was very insecure about her height. She had light brown shoulder-length hair. She had bangs, that she combed off to the left side of her face. Though she normally wore earrings, she did not on this particular day, mostly out of fear of losing them if the concert got too crazy. She was on the slim side, though much closer to normal weight than James.
Tyler was the actual reason they were going to the concert. James bought him the tickets for his seventeenth birthday the weekend before. None of Tyler's friends had wanted to go, so the extra two tickets were given to Sammie and Nicole. Tyler was about the same weight as James, though the thinness not quite as noticeable due to him being somewhat shorter. He had the same black hair as James, though he kept it short.
When they got to The Electric Factory (the closest venue the tour was coming to), the first band had already played. No one except James, who loves any live music, cared. None of them had even heard of the band, regardless. They got in easily, and since they had general admission tickets, they were directed to The Pit, or standing section.
As they entered The Pit, cool air of the outside gave way to the hot and thick atmosphere of the standing room engulfed them. The familiar scent of sweat, smoke, and alcohol greeted them. To someone who frequents small venues, the smell is beautiful, as familiar as the smell of one's own home. To someone who has never been to a concert in such a small space before, like Sammie, it is disgusting.
The lights were dim, but they were bright enough to illuminate the expanse of people in front of them. The roar of hundreds of voices trying to speak over one another greeted their ears, almost as loud as a band performing. To anyone who was not accustomed to the scene, this would be overwhelming. Sammie had trouble dealing with it.
"Ok, I think I'll just stay back here."
"SAM! You came so we could be together!"
"Stay with me."
"No way, man. We need her to get into that crowd. They move for girls." Tyler hooked his arm with Nicole's in a gesture showing that he wouldn't let her stay.
"Well, I'm not going NEAR those people. I think I'd get fucking killed."
"Sammie, don't worry. I do this all the time, and I'm still alive." James grabbed his shoulder and shook him slightly as he spoke.
"Forget it! I'm staying here."
After some more arguing, it was decided that Sammie would stay at the back with Nicole until Bring Me The Horizon started. Then she would enter the mass to find James and Tyler.
The second band, and last before the headliner, was the Architects. After them, there was a fifteen minute break, and during that Nicole went in to find James and Tyler. Eventually, she managed to find Tyler, who hadn't seen James since he went crowd-surfing. Eventually James worked his way back, though he was missing a shoe.
As the lights dropped, and haunting synthesized strings played behind the undistorted guitar that was the intro to the opening song, screams flew from The Pit. As the lights came back up, red, Oli ran on stage with a low growl.
"CRUCIFY ME!!!" The crowd exploded. Bodies jumping up and down, bouncing off of each other, yet never falling. It seemed as though it would never end, the constant, frenzied movement, but the softness of the chorus came. The crowd erupted in song, singing along with the prerecorded vocal track.
"There is a Hell, believe me I've seen it. There is a Heaven, let's keep it a secret." Twenty brief seconds of respite before the next verse began. Nicole had already worn herself out halfway through the six-minute song, and moved further back in The Pit to allow those with energy to be closer up. Tyler was still where he had been, jumping around like the floor was burning his feet. James was once again gone from crowd-surfing, after which he started a moshpit.
The first song finished, and a few short words from Oli later, the next was pummeling their ears. As Nicole enjoyed the song from here medium distance vantage point, Tyler was still flying into people, once nearly taking a man down. As the song reached its chorus, Oli invited people onto the stage. One of them was James, who screamed "I've said it once, I've said it twice," before stage-diving, and again starting a moshpit. Throughout all of this, Sammie remained in his place, standing as close to the exit as was possible while maintaining some view of the band.
