Predestination Paradox: An Interpretation of “Big Me” from Among The Missing

Throughout the whole story, the narrator essentially stalks this man who he believes to be himself from the future. He finds this man to be fascinating, and thinks that he must have a reason for being there. And then, as the man finds the boy, and says, “I have an important message from the future,” what does the boy do? He runs away. After all this time, he has the chance to hear what he has been waiting for, and he leaves. Why would he do that?
I believe he was afraid of what would happen if he knew the future. Because, although this man, his future self, “Big Me,” was a fascinating subject for him, he found him distasteful at the same time. In his notes about “Big Me,” he would leaves messages to himself, pleading to not turn out like this man, pleading to change the future of his life. I believe that, in his mind, being told what would happen in the future would set it in stone, that knowing what happens would cause a predestination paradox. And he wholeheartedly did not want to become that man.
I will try to explain this a little more clearly. Say “Big Me” was in fact the narrator’s future self, just as he believed. If “Big Me” tells him what is going to happen, he will try and prevent it, as he does not want to become this person. However, since “Big Me” does exist, he could assume that hearing what his future holds will start events that would lead to becoming this man it, which he later goes back in time to try and prevent, thus causing it to happen. So, by not finding out the message of what his future holds, those events would never happen. He would then have set in motion a new future that will not lead to him becoming that version of his “Big Me.”
However, there is also a possibility that not listening to the message is what causes him to become “Big Me.” So then, in the future, he decides to go back in time to give a message about what not to do. However, the outcome is the same because he will always run away from the message.
Now, this is a very “out there” look at the story. But I absolutely love science fiction, and this is honestly what I thought about after reading the story. It may be a little hard to follow, or understand even if you do follow it. I get that. It is a very complicated thing that I have trouble with explaining, partially because I really do not understand it that well myself. But seeing the way the narrator’s mind works, with conspiracies and UFOs, I recognized a part of myself from when I was younger. And I am sure this is exactly what I would have been thinking in his situation.
