Who’s to blame?
For if we could not see
If we did not know
The face that faced the world
We would only know
What lay beneath,
The smile, the dimple, the frown
What could we tell?
We could live only, in the moment
Of the knowing us,
In the days as children
When we did not look to see
Or find ourselves,
In what we saw, when we looked
We only knew of what
We felt, we believed, we dreamed
The truest, richest us…
Lost in the long ago
Before we looked, before we knew
The we who looked back!
