"So how does this work again?" Jack asked and I groaned. He waved a hand, motioning for me to calm down. "Your side I mean."
I sighed and glanced out of the window of the living room. The windows on the ship of the Marsavians were lit, so they must be awake.
"I'm going to cause a big distraction on the front of their ship," I explained for the third time. "That will draw most of them onto one side of the ship. Then you can sneak up to our boat, take it, and drive it around to the back of the island. Got it?"
"Yeah... Got it." He said. "But what's the distraction gonna be?"
"The megaphone." I said as a grin spread across my face.
He raised his eyebrows. "What?"
"I can use this to call out to them. Make some noises or distract them. As long as I get it quick enough." I groaned. "All of this thinking is driving me crazy! That's it, I'm getting started."
I grabbed a hand gun off the coffee table, where the rest of the stolen weapons were. Jack grabbed one too and then we headed for the door. He stood up and waited beside me, planning to make a run for our boat.
"This is a risk," I said turning to Jack. "But if I die. Make a... statue in my honor or something. But give me bigger muscles."
He squinted at me as if I had lost my mind. With my second side of the plan, I think I have.
I took a deep breath and pulled the door open. I stepped out, my feet crunching over the arrows in the sand and he followed close behind me.
My heart thudded rapidly in my chest as I scanned the ground for the megaphone. There it was right next to the radio.
We dashed across the sand and I picked up the megaphone. Then without thinking I pressed one of the buttons on the side.
A police siren cut through the silent night air. We ran toward the ship full speed but then I made a sharp right turn toward the front of the ship. Jack stayed close to the side of the ship so he couldn't be seen as he headed for our boat.
I turned the siren off and brung the megaphone to my mouth. Then I shouted, "Come on out. We have some business to discuss about your daughter."
I set the megaphone on the sand with just enough distance from the water washing up shore.
I turned the siren on again and gave it some time to continue ringing. The sound was supposed to draw the Marsavians toward me, making them think that Jack was still with me and we would still be here.
I finally switched off the siren and rushed to the far back of the ship. All I could do was hope that the noise had picked at everyone's curiosity and would draw them to the front of the ship.
I could've went to steal the boat myself, but there was a reason that I wanted Jack to do it.
I planned to find a way to get Henry off the ship and get us to safety. But I wanted a complete escape plan. So if our boat was near the back of the house, we could run through the house to get to it.
I waited behind the ship trying to catch my breath as I listened for any sounds. I placed my gun in the waistband of my pants and then I heard something.
Voices above me.
"They're near the front of the ship, I just saw them." Said an older man. "Bring weapons. I can't believe they gave themselves away so easily."
I turned to our boat which was right behind the ship. There was a ledge that I could hold onto and pull myself upwards. So I reached up and grabbed it.
I pulled myself upward but just a little. The process was harder than I thought.
I gave another burst of strength and was finally able to reach the top. I tried to climb onto the boat but my hands began to slip.
I felt someone grab my hand and pull me up. I looked and saw that it was Jack. He had already climbed on.
I finally managed to pull myself onto the boat and collasped on the floor.
Jack ducked down behind the wall of the boat and shook his head.
"You're heavier than I thought." He said as he peeked over at the ship.
I shook my head and climbed to my feet. I took a look over at the ship too and noticed there was no one there.
"This is my chance." I said as I climbed onto the wall and held my balance.
Jack grabbed my arm. "This is crazy man. What if you get caught?"
"If I don't get out in less than ten minutes, create another distraction, and come in to get me."
I didn't wait for a reply. I pulled free from his grasp and jumped to the ship. I grabbed onto the railing and quickly climbed upward, which seemed much easier this time.
I climbed onto the ship and glanced back at Jack and waved for him to take off.
I turned away from him and sighed. Here goes nothing.
* * *
Trapped.
There was no way I would be able to leave this ship now. Everyone seemed to realize that Jack and I were no longer near that megaphone. Now they had returned back to where they were and were all over the ship.
I was stuck in a small room, no bigger than a walk-in closet. I was afraid that if I came out, I'd be caught.
Only a thin sliver of light shined in through the half shut door. I had tried to shut the door all the way but it was just way too old.
I stopped breathing as I heard footsteps outside the door. I backed up against the wall and raised my gun. I took aim in case anyone entered.
But the footsteps passed the door so I relaxed.
I can't continue waiting in here, I thought. I'm bound to get caught soon anyway.
I approached the door as slowly and silently as possible. Then I pulled it open.
The door creaked loudly and I gasped.
Damn this door, I thought angrily as I continued to pull it open.
I peeked out into the hall and I didn't see or hear anyone.
I thought about unscrewing the dull light bulb in the ceiling of the hall. It would be easier to walk around without being seen. But then again that could backfire and I wouldn't be able to see them.
I crept out into the hall, staying as alert as possible. There was a corner up ahead and I hoped to God no one would be around it.
Once I got to the corner, I took a quick peek and sighed in relief as I saw that it was empty.
I stepped around the corner and started walking again. There was a door to my right.
Does it lead to another hall or a room? Could Henry be in there?
I sighed and prayed to God that the next thing I did, wouldn't be the dumbest thing I ever would do.
Or the last.
I grabbed the doorknob with my free hand and froze when I heard voices on the other side. Two men chatting.
I would have to be quick and efficient.
I shoved open the door and stepped inside, my gun already pointed straight ahead.
"Don't move!" I shouted but my voice cracked on the last word.
The room was crowded... And I mean crowded.
There were atleast fifteen men in the room. The two I heard were standing in front of the door glaring at me.
A few men were seated on a tattered gray couch holding the phones they stole from us.
Five of the men were standing around a table which was covered with some sort of map.
The rest of the men were sitting on chairs at the back of the room drinking beers. They stopped when they saw me.
My mind went blank for a moment, but seconds later it was back in action. I gave them my best innocent smile and backed out of the room very slowly.
One of the men near the door reached for me and I slammed the door shut on his arm. He groaned and I spun from the room and started running.
There was a roar behind me as I dashed down the hall. I turned around the next corner and saw two doors ahead.
Damn it! I went the wrong way. I should've went back the way I came.
I pushed through the doors and ran right into a counter. The impact sent me rolling over the top of the counter and back to the floor.
I fell onto my back, but luckily it wasn't a hard fall. Pain washed over my leg but I pushed myself up from the floor.
I realized I was in a kitchen. There were several counters in the room, along with a few stoves.
The doors flew open behind me so I maneuvered around the counter and across the room. I passed another counter and grabbed a silver pot nearby.
I pushed through the next doors and headed into the hall.
I have to get upstairs so I can get back outside, I thought as I searched frantically for a stairwell.
I saw a door to my far right and another up ahead.
The one to my right was closer. I turned right and ran to the door.
I held the pan under my arm and turned the knob. My heart skipped a beat when I discovered it was locked.
I stepped back and then kicked the door but it wouldn't budge.
I turned around and saw two of the men approaching me. Their eyes were narrowed in anger and their hands were balled into fists.
I stepped toward the first one switching the pot to my left hand. He started to swing at me but I wacked him in the head with the pot. He slumped to the floor and I dropped the pot beside him.
The second guy came at me and I shot him in his leg. He let out a yelp and covered the wound. I pushed him to the floor and stumbled over his body.
I turned the corner heading for the door up ahead. The doors opened behind me and I heard dozens of men rushing after me.
Once I reached the door I grabbed the knob and gave it a push.
Yes! This one was unlocked.
The men were getting close so I rushed inside. I shut the door just in time. Then I grabbed a chair nearby and jammed it under the knob.
I heard pounding on the other side but the door seemed strong enough to put up with it.
I turned from the door and looked around. This room was brightly lit, much brighter than the others. There was a few light bulbs in the ceiling above me.
I never knew ships could have so much electricity. This ship must be worth more than I thought.
A heavy thud landed on the other side of the door and the chair shook a little. Time to find an escape.
I walked across the carpeted room and around the beige couch. There was a shelf against the wall with multiple bottles of wine and liquor.
I looked to my right and saw someone seated in a wooden chair. There was rope tied around his body and legs so he couldn't move. His head was slumped forward and his chesnut hair fell over his face. But there was no doubt that it was Henry.
But now I scary thought crossed my mind.
Is he still alive?
