Loving An Englishman

If you love an Englishman, you love England.
It’s part and parcel, as they say.
Lush green history and rolling consistencies.
You stand on your English foundation.
Sturdy and hewn by the conquering souls
That sailed the Earth, took what wasn’t theirs
And made something new.
Cloaked those new lands, wove those new people
Into a fabric that wrapped the globe
With tensile strength that survived
The pull and stretch, until it didn’t and was
Torn asunder.
And yet the pattern, set, survives; its imprint
Unmistakable.
