Take off your shoes on the beach by the water.
It’s fun at first.
The ghosts of the waves that tickle your ankles.
They welcome you.
“We’re friends” they say.
Go further, feel the sand underfoot,
Take care for jellyfish.
It’s not so cold now you’re used to it.
Knees can handle it though the cold North Sea is brutal.
Brace yourself.
It hits your crotch and you gasp.
Keep going.
At chest you look back but no one is watching.
But you must press on.
At neck you have doubts.
But only briefly.
One step further.
You have no doubts.

The poem makes me think of Ingrid Jonker who wrote of her own tragic death where she walked into the sea and in the end her body washed out on the sand in sea weed and grass the same as she foretold. It also makes one think of Van Gogh and Eugene Marais and many others. As for myself life ends soon enough I'd rather hang around a bit and check what happens. I've never felt like that.
Or maybe she's just going for a swim braving the cold atlantic?
