Don't let your sad regrets be your reward

You set yourself some targets, that you knew you couldn't meet,
Your life's made up of statements, that you never can repeat
you held yourself to ransom; said your money or your life
...and now you're feeling sorry, that she never was your wife
when you're falling on your and trusty, righteous sword
Don't let your sad regrets be your reward
You thought you were a liberal, you thought 'my shit don't smell!',
you thought you were the only piece of heaven in this hell.
they shaved their heads, while you were sticking flowers in your hair,
free love started costing and you thought it so unfair,
you shouted, 'wait for me', but no one heard
Don't let your sad regrets be your reward
The answers to your questions, were all blowing in the wind,
but you had ticked the boxes and were too late to rescind.
You left the bus too early, but you'd got on much too late,
you put your poor mismanagement, all down to a fickle fate
your reasoning was simply quite absurd
Don't let your sad regrets be your reward
'I wish', 'what if', 'if only', is your daily mantra now
and the meat you've eaten, was your one and only sacred cow.
yesterday's tomorrow, on your list of future plans
you still set the pace, in the long race of also-ran's;
Progress, is a river you can't ford.
Don't let your sad regrets be your reward.
