What kind of surprise,
can make you surmise,
that somehow, you knew it was coming?
The thought though, is brief
and brings no relief,
because it was just too mind-numbing.
The hospital tea
they brought us, was free;
'that's a bad sign', I heard you express.
Your diagnosis,
that it tasted like piss,
an unselfish attempt to digress!
A tumour, they said
somewhere in your head...
I remember the look on your face.
Your tongue licked your lips,
as you came to grips,
and unseeing, you stared into space.
When I look back now,
it's weird but somehow,
in hindsight, the twilight was dawning.
When we buried you,
I realized too,
this portal, had been so long yawning.

I really like this! The first, third and fourth stanzas work best for me - can't quite feel the same rhythmn in the second but overall it is excellent and will have me re-reading a fair few times to absorb it properly, I think. Well done Mr!
