Shattered

She tried to catch the wind
when blown asunder.
She thought that she could hold it, in her hands.
But it would not rescind
and stole her thunder
and now, I think, she finally understands.
Love was never meant
to be defeated
or fought, as though a foe, with all your heart.
You cannot prevent
becoming heated,
she really should have known, right from the start.
But surprises, by their very definition
will catch you unaware; make you confused
and if all you've ever known is admonition,
then you may think, that you're just being used.
Her heart was rent in two,
then finally shattered;
the pieces, tore like shrapnel, through her mind
and she could not repair
the parts that mattered;
sometimes the cards, we're dealt, can be unkind.
So if you should run into her, where you travel
let your judgment not be coloured by her pain.
If you tell her, that you love her, you'll unravel
the little that is left, that keeps her sane.
