Natural Selection.

Eighteen months ago our small road that had been two way for years became one way. It saved a lot of arguments that used to happen when both cars met in the middle and no one would budge. So it was a relief when it became one way. I did say to my family, even this week, “Please be careful when crossing the road, remember to look both ways, as drivers still occasionally drive down the wrong way on purpose, as it’s quicker.”
I usually park at the bottom of my road and not outside my home, as I don’t have power steering on my car, as those outside our home tend to park almost bumper to bumper, because you can get into smaller spaces with power steering. Down the road where there are less houses I like to park there and walk up to my home.
Last week I was at the bottom of the road as usual and I looked behind me to make sure there was nothing coming up the road, the was nothing so I pulled out, when suddenly in the dusk, with no lights on and dressed in dark clothing was five lads on their bicycle’s!
I thought I’d hit one of them, I was a hair’s breadth away from him! I quickly looked in my rear view mirror, none were on the ground. As I’d pulled out and missed the one nearest to me I heard one of the lads say, “WHOA,” that told me just how close I was. It unnerved me, for there would have been no witnesses, as not there is not many houses at this end of the street. But I would have had the other four as witnesses, but not the fifth one for he would have died, the speed that they were going! One of them was even doing a wheelie! I calmed myself, and if I was a smoker I would have had a fag and if a drinker I would have had a swig of whiskey! When I later returned home I told Paul what had happened and he said something I’ve heard him say often, “It’s natural selection.......”
Then this week as I was walking up my road I saw the same five lads again coming down the road the wrong way all on their little toy scooters! They must be nuts! Or have a death sentence! Towards the bottom of the road it slops quite steep so they go very fast! Maybe that’s what gives these teenagers the thrill? I watched as they all turned right into the main road without stopping, into what would be on coming traffic, but luckily for them, this time there was no traffic.
Last night as I walked to my car, I saw three of the lads again on their little scooters belting down the road and a car raced around the corner, no indicator, no slowing down, the car had to brake suddenly, as all their little scooter wheels screeched to a halt! I bet all four hears missed a beat. The driver didn’t say anything to them, maybe he had no insurance or tax or maybe he too needed to calm himself!
I think it only a matter of time now. Before their time runs out!
