Waste Not

There's not much worse than wastage,
Buying food that you don't eat.
Yet when you buy it, you don't know it,
Then you throw it, in defeat.
If only we all noticed,
As the dates on food arrive.
That's when we should all use it,
To help someone else survive.
So all these special offers,
Of 2 for less, or three for two.
Or buy one get one free,
Fantastic deals, all aimed at you.
The Supermarkets leave you wanting,
Something you never knew you did.
You quickly buy the bargain,
Then in the fridge is where it hid.
Until one day the fridge is full,
You really are bemused.
Then the penny drops, you realise,
It's filled with food you never used.
But how can this be possible,
You'd planned out all your meals.
Though perhaps, some foods you bought too much,
Especially on those awesome deals.
Now, imagine all their faces,
If you could simply take it back.
Then ask them for a refund,
Even if it's quite a stack.
They'd have to change the offers,
Make them practical for sure.
Instead of something glammed up,
And only placed there as a lure.
Or maybe you can share it,
Before it's far too late.
Just simply pay attention,
To that flamin 'Use by' date.

Hi Trevor,
You're right. We create enough waste as it is without supermarkets encouraging it in the name of so called 'consumer choice'. I was once told there is enough food available to feed everyone on the planet - or at least there would be if we 'first world countries' didn't keep sending so much of it to landfill.
Good subject and well said.
Regards
Jack

The dates seem so far ahead,
The dates seem so far ahead, then suddenly you find they're past! Takes quite an effort to think, 'no I've got enough of that already' when there's a good offer, or, 'now the children have flown the nest, we really can't get through that much, better leave the offers to young families' ! Rhiannon
