She Doesn't Like The Dark

It was a cold day
But the rain didn't come.
We stood around like ghosts
Watching an ancient ritual.
Shared grief
Private pain
It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do
Walk away and leave her there alone.
The earth was ripped apart
The empty space lay yawning
And we stood and watched
As we put her in the ground.
And all I could think was
She doesn't like the dark.
