The Fanatic Four Chapter One

Well, let me introduce myself, I am Vidit. I was one of the most notorious lots in my school, blacklisted by all the teachers. If anything went wrong, I was the first one to be called by the principal.
Madan, Vikrant and Kishan are my best friends. We have been together for the last 10 years, studying in the same school and even in the same section. We are in class XI now. All these years we have done almost everything that a good student wouldn’t even dream of - bunking classes, beating up juniors, ragging newcomers and the rest, less discussed the better.
Among the four of us, Madan is the one with the quintessential ‘killer looks’. Vikrant too is well built with a charming personality. Kishan is the weakest of the lot. He is lanky to the extent of being called a skeleton. I was somewhere in between as far as my physique is concerned. Neither do I have a good personality.
June 5, 2008, 5 am
It was about five in the morning. Having hit the bed quite late the previous night, I was fast asleep when my cell phone rang. Half asleep, I picked up the phone as I heard Vikrant’s screaming. He seemed angry. “Where are you?” he demanded. “I had asked you to wake me up. You were supposed to pick me up for our mathematics tuition at five,” he added.
I was one lazy bone who could give up everything for a good night’s sleep. I could bunk classes or tuitions without a frown. “Shut up man. Who the hell can study at five in the morning? Go to sleep now,” I quipped and put the phone down.
Vikrant was perhaps the only one among us who could strike a perfect balance between studies and ‘other’ activities. The rest of us would always look up to him when it came to studies. And we had no qualms in admitting that it was because of him we managed to scrape through our board exams. In another 10 minutes, the phone rang again. This time I picked it up and shouted at him, “Vikrant, I have already told you we don’t need to go to the tuition class today.”
Hearing me shout over the phone, a startled Kishan asked “When did I say I wanted to go to the tuition class today?”
“Oh, I am sorry Kishan. I thought it was Vikrant. He just called me a few minutes ago asking me to pick him up on our way to the mathematics tuition,” I said.
“After the board results, Vikrant seemed to have become too serious about studies, isn’t it?” asked Kishan, as if he wanted my answer in affirmation.
“Yeah, you are right. I think his parents have been putting a lot of pressure on him these days. They want him to qualify the engineering entrance examination,” I replied, feeling a bit sad at Vikrant’s predicament.
Suddenly remembering what he had called for, Vikrant interrupted my chain of thought. “I called to say that I want the three of you to come to my place at six in the evening,” he said.
I was curious. “Okay, but why do you want us to meet at your place? We could meet at our regular hangout place,” I suggested.
“I have a surprise for all of you, something which I can show you only when you drop in to my place,” Vikrant sounded mysterious.
Later that day, Madan, Vikrant and I met at our hideout, a place where we spent most part of the day.
Madan looked excited. He asked, “Do you know why Kishan has invited us to his house?”
Vikrant and I were clueless and simply said “No” in unison.
“Do you know why he has called us?” It was my turn to ask Madan.
“If I had known why would I have asked you?” Madan replied, visibly irritated at my stupid question.
Madan was short tempered who would get irritated at slightest provocation. He was ‘the angry young man’ of our team and often we would teasingly call him the Big B.
Vikrant was lovingly called Vik. Kishan and I apparently had names which suited our personalities, so there were no questions of substituting with any other pet names.
