Childrens Picture Book Idea: A Wobble Book: A  children’s picture book that exploits the visual phenomenon known as Chromostereopsis -

Firstly: What is Chromostereopsis?

“Chromostereopsis is a visual illusion whereby the impression of depth is conveyed in two-dimensional color images, usually of red-blue or red-green colors, but can also be perceived with red-grey or blue-grey images.  Chromatic aberration results from the differential refraction of light depending on its wavelength, causing some light rays to converge before others in the eye (longitudinal chromatic aberration or LCA) and/or to be located on non-corresponding locations of the two eyes during binocular viewing (transverse chromatic aberration or TCA).

Chromostereopsis is usually observed using a target with red and blue bars and an achromatic background. Positive chromostereopsis is exhibited when the red bars are perceived in front of the blue and negative chromostereopsis is exhibited when the red bars are perceived behind the blue.”

Secondly: My idea is to have children’s picture books in which all the illustrations are red upon a blue back ground or blue upon a red background or other contrasting colours that create this effect, giving the pictures a sense of depth and also allowing the child to “Wobble” the foreground image by shaking the book from side to side. I know that this effect is possible because, as a small child, I took great pleasure from shaking a blue coloured book with red print on it and watching the red print appear to wobble.

Why not spray the paper pages and covers of children’s books with hydrophobic coating so that if the book falls, accidentally, in the bath the books won’t get so wet that the pages stick together.
