Once upon a time, a Fixie was flying about looking for work to do.
A Fixie, as its name might suggest, is a cross between a fairy and a pixie but unlike those creatures; Fixies do not cause mischief.
Instead, Fixies fix things with the tools in their magic tool boxes.
And, after searching high and low for hours, the Fixie found a man who was sad because, he said, he had lost the key to his house.
"No problem", said the Fixie to him, reaching into his tool box and taking out his magic screw driver, "I'll have the door open in two swishes of a unicorns tail".
Then the Fixie proceeded to wave his screwdriver just like a magic wand, saying,
"Magic screwdriver, do as I say. Open this mans door right away".
Then a bright beam of light shot out of the end of the screwdriver and into the keyhole of the locked door and when it did, suddenly the door unlocked itself and swung open.
"Oh thank you very much", said the man to the Fixie.
"Don't mention it", said the Fixie, "Fixies are only happy when they're helping people".
But then, following the man into the house, the Fixie saw him putting lots of things into a big sack.
"Hmm?", he said to the man, "If you don't mind me asking what are you doing?".
"Oh, just putting rubbish in a bag", said the man, "For recycling".
"Recycling?", said the Fixie, smiling, "Oh thats very considerate of you. Its always good to help mother nature".
But then, looking at the things that the man was putting in his sack, like a golden carriage clock and money and jewellery from a wall safe Fixie couldn't help thinking that something wasn't right.
"Those things that you're throwing away", said the Fixie, "They don't look like rubbish to me. Infact they look very expensive".
"Oh I'm not going to throw them away", said the man, "I'm...um...I'm going to donate them to charity. Thats what I meant by recycling them. I'm going to donate them to help poor children".
"Poor children?", said the Fixie, "Oh that is that nice of you".
But then the man, saying that he was in a hurry rushed out of the house with his sack over one shoulder.
And the Fixie, noticing that the man had forgotten to lock the door behind him, was just about to rush out after him and tell him when, suddenly, in through the front door he saw a man and woman enter and, looking distressed, the woman said to the man,
"Oh no, Arthur. I think we've been burgled".
"Burgled?", the Fixie asked, flying up to her, "You mean this is your house?".
Amazed to see a little fairy creature appear infront of them, the man and woman were both speechless but, realizing that he had been tricked by a burglar into helping him rob their house, the Fixie said to them, "Don't worry. I can fix this".
Then, suddenly, as fast as a firefly, the Fixie shot off out of the front door.
"I've got to catch that burglar", said the Fixie to himself, "And get back the things he stole from that poor man and woman".
But he didn't know which way the burglar had gone and so, reaching inside his magic tool box, the Fixie took out a magic magnifying glass and, looking through it at the ground below, he said,
"Magic magnifying glass, show me the footprints of that burglar".
And all at once, the Fixie saw the footprints that the Burglar had left behind begin to glow bright red.
Then, following the trail of glowing footprints out of the garden of the house and along the street, it wasn't long before the Fixie had caught up with the Burglar.
"Stop you thief", said the Fixie flying towards him.
Realizing the Fixie was chasing him, the Burglar started to panic but then, seeing a park nearby with a big crowd of people in it, the Burglar ran into the park, losing himself in the crowd.
"Oh I'll never find him now", said the Fixie looking at the big crowd, "Not amongst all those people".
But then the Fixie had another idea and, reaching into his magic tool box, he took out a magic megaphone, a special device that made his voice sound louder and, speaking into it, he said,
"Attention, people in the crowd. Theres a big prize for anyone who can spot a man carrying a large sack".
Immediately, with his pointy fairy ears that were so powerful they could hear a pin drop a mile away, the Fixie heard a woman shout, "He's there. I've spotted him".
And, flying as fast as a fairy thunderbolt over the crowd and in the direction of the womans voice, suddenly, the Fixie saw the Burglar and, seizing him by the back of his coat with one hand, lifted him up off of his feet and high into the air.
"Got you", said the Fixie to the dangling burglar.
"What do I win?", asked the woman who had spotted the burglar, excitedly.
Using his free hand, the Fixie reached into his magic toolbox and, after rummaging about a bit, pulled out a giant teddybear that he handed to the woman.
"There you go Madam", he said, smiling.
But then, seizing hold of the burglar with both hands so that he couldn't escape, the Fixie flew with him back to the house he had burgled.
And fortunately there was now a police car outside the house and two policemen were standing in the garden of the house talking to its owners.
Flying down and landing infront of the astonished policemen, still holding the burglar, the Fixie said, "Here you are officers. This is the man who burgled the house and in his sack you'll find all the things he stole".
"Thats the fairy I told you about", said the woman who owned the house to the policemen, pointing towards him, "I told you he was real".
"Not a Fairy madame; a Fixie", said the Fixie to the woman, "But I'm glad I could help. Thats what Fixies do".
One of the policemen, hurriedly opening his notebook and taking hold of a pencil was just about to ask him to spell Fixie but by then the Fixie had already disappeared in a glimmer of golden Fixie dust.
He'd gone far away, looking for someone else in need of help and hopefully this time, he thought, he wouldn't get into such a fix.
