Golden Memories

Orange and yellow
school crayons drawing
Autumn onto stiff black paper;
Autumn leaves of
orange and gold
and bright marigolds
that glow through the gloom.
They draw two triangular eyes
then an upturned triangular nose
and a zig-zag mouth;
then, curving round,
an orange pumpkin
lantern sitting on a mantelpiece
glowing like someone
remembering.
Also glowing in the candlelight
is its seed filled pulp
scraped and scooped out
like Halloween goo;
the smell of pumpkin
and the glow of pumpkin
soup inside.
Then a big
yellow moon
and a black hatted witch
with an orange cat
upon her broom
and bright red
as rosy cheeks;
red toffee apples.
And, with black paper
darkness all around
glowing faces looking up
at skies filled with
fireworks.
With loud bangs;
orange and gold
sparkling fountains
rain down from the
black sky;
white mist gushes from the mouths
of shivering people
who are warm inside
and white smoke curls
and orange and yellow
flames leap and crackle
from bonfires.
They are only
rough images like
childhood pictures
but those are the
memories of Autumn
that glow in
my mind.
