The clock strikes one
then Jack and John
come out to ring a bell.
 
The clock strikes two
then a cuckoo
pops out and sings as well.
 
The clock strikes three;
a bumblebee
buzzes about a bloom.
 
The clock strikes four
and from a door
a little rocket zooms.
 
The clock strikes five
and from a div-
ing board a man goes splash.
 
The clock strikes six
and a foot kicks
a ball through a window. SMASH!
 
The clock strikes seven
and up to heaven
a little angel soars.
 
The clock strikes eight
and then a great
lion leaps out and roars.
 
The clock strikes nine
and sparkling wine
forces a cork to pop.
 
The clock strikes ten
and that is when
a woodcutter goes chop.
 
The clock strikes eleven
and back down from heaven
comes the angel dressed in white.
 
Then the clock strikes twelve
and two little elves
come out to say goodnight

is it supposed to say aswell or as well?  in line 6,  I suppose that the stanza's are supposed to teach counting, in an easy way, only isn't it a little long for little ones?

Hi, Maisie.

Well, its got 12 hours so I suppose its not much longer than the festive favourite "The 12 days of Christmas" and only a bit longer than Septimus Winner's poem "Ten Little Indians".

As a 'little one' I used to love clocks with bell ringers and cuckoos; automatons and mechanical toys from the victorian era. When I write for children I channel all the things I loved as a child.

I also loved the long childrens poems of writers AA Milne and Lewis Carroll (The Hunting of The Snark)

But in my days, Children were expected/forced to read difficult and challenging things like, for example, Alice In Wonderland or Gullivers Travels or Der Struwwelpeter, they weren't pandered to and I feel they were better off for it.
