I Wonder Why The Cock Still Crows

I wonder why the cock still crows.
Perhaps he really doesn't know
that he's no longer wild and free
and has no masculinity.

 

That his hens now lay eggs to eat
or else are fattened up for meat.
If he knew how they had been robbed
would he still crow or would he sob?

 

Would he still stand and greet the sun
or strut around the chicken run
with feathered chest puffed out in pride
or his head, like an ostrich, hide.

 

But perhaps he chose to forget
that on his kind the sun has set
like many of Mother Nature's men
and though he crows, won't rise again.
