On an island, far away, in the middle of a deep blue sea, lived a beautiful, honey skinned and raven tressed princess named Leolani and Leolani loved a young man named Kanye.
But Kanye was only a poor farmers son and the father of Leolani; Chief Haku, wanted his daughter to marry a great warrior or hunter.
However, upon the Island there was a volcano and, deep inside the volcano, lived a huge rainbow dragon; a dragon that had scales that were all the colours of the rainbow and Kanye knew that if he could just slay the dragon then Haku would let him marry his daughter Leolani.
And so Kanye set out with only his ukulele towards the volcano where the rainbow dragon lived.
As he was walking along playing his Ukulele however, he passed by his old grandmother Makani who was trying to climb a tree to get a cocoanut.
“Climb up and get me a cocoanut, will you”, she asked, “Get me the biggest one”.
And so, Kanye, because he was a kind, good natured boy, climbed up the tree and got down the largest cocoanut from the top of it.
And when he did, his grandmother Makani got out her big chopper and chopped the cocoanut in half, giving the boy half the cocoanut.
“Take this for your troubles”, she said, smiling.
Then Kanye went upon his way, again playing his ukulele but carrying the half coacoanut, wearing it on his head as a hat because he didn’t have anything to carry the cocoanut in.
But then, Kanye had not gone far before, to his amazement, he saw his grandmother Makani again and this time, she was trying to pick some flowers.
“Come here and pick these flowers, will you?”, she said, “So that I can make garlands out of them”.
And so, Kanye, because he was a kind, good natured boy, picked a whole bunch of flowers for his grandmother.
And , when he did, his grandmother made a garland out of some of them and, hanging it round his neck, she said, “Take this for your troubles”.
And so then, with the garland of flowers hanging round his neck and the half cocoanut upon his head, playing his ukulele, Kanye went upon his way.
But then, just as before, after he had gone only a short distance further, he saw his grandmother and this time, she was trying to catch some fish.
“Come here and catch these fish for me, will you?”, she asked.
And, although he had done so much for his grandmother already and was very tired, Kanye, because he was a kind, good natured boy went and caught two big fish for his grandmother.
And when he did, his grandmother took one of them and the other one she gave to Kanye.
“Here”, she said, handing him the fish, “Take this for your troubles”.
Now Kanye had enough to carry because he already had the half cocoanut upon his head and the garland of flowers round his neck but he liked his grandmother and didn’t want to insult her by refusing the fish, so he held the fish in one hand by the tail and his Ukulele in the other and went upon his way.
But now, before long, he came to the great volcano upon the edge of the island and, looking up towards the mouth of the volcano, he called out to the rainbow dragon.
“Great Rainbow Dragon”, he said, “I am Kanye and I am a warrior; a hunter; the greatest and the fiercest of all on the island and I dare you to face me”.
Now Kanye heard the sound of the dragon’s deep, booming laughter rumbling from inside the volcano and a voice saying, “Go away, little man. I have eaten plenty of pigs and chickens today and my stomach is full. Come back when I am hungry and I will eat you then”.
But Kanye refused to leave,
“Come out and face me, cowardly dragon”, he said, “I will not leave until I have fought you and slain you”.
Now the dragon, hearing this, became angry and Kanye saw his long neck and head rise as high as a tree trunk; then his torso rise as high as a hill top; then his whole body rise as high as a mountain.
“I gave you a chance to live, little man”, he said, “But you would not listen so now I have no choice but to kill you”.
And then, blowing out a torrent of rainbow coloured fire from his mouth, the dragon tried to burn the boy but, when that happened, the garland of flowers that his grandmother had hung around his neck became a breastplate of shining metal that the dragons fire, though hot as the fires deep under the earth, couldn’t burn through or melt away.
So now the dragon tried to pick up large stones from round about the volcano and drop them upon Kanye’s head but, when it did this, the half of cocoanut that his grandmother had given him turned into a helmet of shining metal that protected him from the falling boulders that, each of them, were large enough to crush a man.
So now the dragon, opening up wide his mouth and roaring like a thousand erupting volcanos, tried to bite of the head of Kanye, its head seeming to fly down out of the air time and time again like a thunderbolt striking the earth but then, each time this happened, the fish that his grandmother gave him became a spear and he jabbed it into the dragons scaly cheek and made the dragon roar with pain as if it had been stung by a hornet.
Now the dragon saw that Kanyehad magic that, with all his dragon strength and powers, he could not defeat and he pleaded with Kanye.
“Why, little man, are you trying to slay me? What have I ever done to you?”.
So Kanye told him about Leolani and how her father Chief Hakuwould not let him marry her unless he was a great warrior and hunter.
Hearing this, the dragon offered to fly away and leave the island but the boy said that he must have proof that he had slain the dragon and so the dragon shed his rainbow coloured tail and gave it to the warrior before, spreading its rainbow wings wide, it flew off towards the setting sun and was never seen again.
But then Kanyetook the rainbow tail back with him and, seeing it, chief Haku knew that he must be a great warrior and that night, beneath the full moon and beside the whispering sea, as a hundred torches burned and a hundred ukulele’s played, Kanye and Leolani were married.
And the next morning, when they came out of their hut together, they saw that the tail of the rainbow dragon had risen up into the sky and become the first rainbow which, smiling, Kanye’s grandmother explained was an auspicious sign which meant that they both would live happily ever after.
