A long time ago, a princess named Merlinda was abducted by cruel kidnappers and locked in a tower by the edge of the sea.
But the Princess would watch ships from her window go sailing by and she had the idea that if she shone a lamp from the window then, one day, some passing ship would see her light and whoever sailed upon the ship would come to save her.
Unfortunately, though many sailors upon their ships did see her light, because it was not unusual to see a light coming from a tower, they thought nothing of it and went sailing on.
And after some time of trying and failing to signal to the ships for help the princess was almost at hopes end.
But then, one night there was a terrible thick fog all across the sea and the fishing ship of a young captain called Permian got lost in the fog and so lost were he and his crew that they feared their ship would run aground and get smashed upon the rocky coastline.
But then, suddenly, through the fog the sailors on the ship saw the Princess's light and because of that light they avoided crashing into the rocks and made their way safely home.
And the next day, Permian felt so greatful to the person who had shone the light from the tower that he thought he must thank them.
"Whoever they are; whyever they shone their light", he said, "They saved the lives of me and my crew and for that they should be thanked".
And so, during the day when it was clear and bright the young captain sailed to the place where the tower was and seeing him from her window the princess called out for help, explaining how the Kidnappers had abducted her and locked her in the tower.
When the Captain tried to free her from the tower, however, he found it impossible to break down its door, even when his crewmen helped him, because the door was made out of iron.
But then, just when he was thinking of giving up trying, suddenly the clever young captain had an idea and shouting to his crew he ordered them to bring their fishing net and to hold it spread out beneath the window of the tower.
And then, at the captains instruction, the Princess leapt from the window of her tower and was caught in the fishing net.
After that the ship took the princess back to the kingdom of her father and, as a reward for saving the princess, the young captain was given her hand in marriage.
And when he became a Prince, the captain passed a law that towers should be built all along the coast of his kingdom, towers that were to be called lighthouses, that would help sailors find their way whenever they were lost in a fog.
Then he and his princess lived together happily everafter.
