One hot summer, many summers ago; the Sun king came down from his golden kingdom in the sky riding upon his winged golden chariot, seeking one of the Princesses of the Earth to be his bride.
But, unfortunately, whenever the Sun king touched anything, his touch was so hot that it would burst into flames.
So when he went to see the Green princess of the forests and jungles, he started a huge forest fire and when he dived down deep to the bottom of the sea to see the Blue princess of the seas and oceans, he was so hot that made the seas and oceans boil and covered the Earth in a big fog of steam and when he flew to the North Pole to see the White Princess of Snow and Ice, she shut the doors and windows of her palace and wouldn’t let him enter, fearing that his kiss would make her melt away altogether.
Finally, however, just as the Sun king was about to give up hope of ever finding a princess to be his bride, he looked down and saw a volcano out of which smoke was rising and lava was exploding and, diving into the volcano, he swam down deep through thousands of miles of burning lava until he reached the centre of the Earth and there he found the palace of the Red Princess, Princess of fire and when he kissed her and held her, because she like he was made of fire it did not burn her and so, soon after, in a temple of golden light and blazing red fire, the two were married.
And that is why, ever since, every evening the sun will dive deep under the Earth; he’ll dive into a volcano in the west and swim down to the land of Fire to see the Red Princess, the sky turning red as a rose in her honour and will stay with her all night until, in the morning he will leap out of a volcano in the East up to his home in the sky.
