Once upon a time a prince and princess were married and, as was customary in their kingdom, they tied the two ends of a piece of rope together to symbolise their union saying, "Just like our love, this knot shall never be undone".
One day however, the princess became very ill with a disease
And it was a disease said the three royal physicians, which was fatal and though they tried every remedy known to medical science nothing they tried seemed to help.
And so the prince, knowing that his wife would die, decided to spend all the time they had left with her in her room, lying by her side and taking care of her needs.
But then, one stormy night, the window of their bedchamber blew open and in flew the black prince of death and he said to the princess,
"The fatal hour has come, I'm afraid. Like all souls, you must come into my dark realm".
The prince tried to hold onto the princess's hand.
"No", he said to the black prince, "I will not let you take her".
But he saw the soul of the princess rising out of her body and felt her spirit hand slipping through his fingers.
"Ordinary flesh cannot hold onto the spirit once it is time for the spirit to leave", said Death to the prince.
But then, while looking around in desperation, the prince saw the love knot that he and the princess had tied on their wedding day and that was hanging above their bed and, seizing hold of it, he threw the knotted rope around deaths shoulders.
At first, seeing the knot, death merely grinned, as the face of death does but when he tried to break free of the rope, he realized that, even with all his magical might, he could not.
"Impossible", said death.
"Its not impossible", said the prince, "Its the power of love and there is nothing stronger than that".
So then, after struggling for a long time to escape the knot and failing, death agreed that, if the prince would let him go, he would let the princess live.
And so, letting go of the princess's soul, the prince of death lifted the curse of her sickness from her and then, as soon as the prince let death loose, death became a dark whirlwind and blew away out of the window and into the night.
After that, with the princess well again, she and the prince lived happily evermore.
