Once there was a girl called Lucibella who lived in a cottage in the woods and one day an old gnome with a long, grey beard knocked upon her door and said that he was tired and wondered if he could sit down.
And because Lucibella was a kind young woman who would always do anything to help anyone, she said,
"Why ofcourse. Please do come in and sit down".
Then the gnome took off his shoes and put up his feet upon her kitchen table and his socks smelled terrible, not to mention his big toe stuck out through a hole in one of his socks, but Lucibella was far too polite and kind to say anything and just placed a potpourri upon the table and opened a window to let fresh air in.
Then, however the gnome asked if he could have a drink of water and so Lucibella went to fetch water from her well and when she came back she poured him out a cup of water.
But then the gnome said he was hungry and asked if Lucibella would give him something to eat and so Lucibella went and got him some bread and butter and cheese to eat.
But then, once he had eaten, he asked if he might take a bath.
Lucibella was very surprised by this but the gnome explained that he had been travelling a long time and had not been able to take a bath for nearly a week and so she prepared a room with a washtub and filled it with hot water, then giving the gnome some soap, a flannel and towel left him to take a bath.
Afterwards however, the gnome asked if he might have somewhere to sleep because he was very tired and had not slept almost two nights and so Lucibella took him into a spare room where there was a bed and said he could sleep there.
And all through the night she was kept awake by the sound of the gnome snoring like a bear and muttering in his sleep but still, because she was too polite and kind, she said nothing.
The next morning however when Lucibella, thinking that her guest had spent too long in bed, went to wake him, instead of a gnome she found a handsome young man sleeping in his bed.
Cautiously, tapping the sleeping man upon his back, she woke him and then asked where the gnome had gone who had been in the bed the night before.
Smiling, the prince explained that he was the gnome.
"A witch turned me into a gnome and told me that the spell would only be broken if I could find someone who, however much a nuisance I was to them, would be kind and obliging to me. You were such a person and your kindness must have broken the spell", he explained.
Then the Prince asked if he could return Lucibellas kindness by inviting her to live at his palace; an offer which she graciously accepted and after living with the prince for many months they fell in love, were married and lived happily ever after.
