Once there was a girl called Mirabella who had been raised from infancy by her evil stepmother and her stepmother put a magic mirror in the hall of their house that, whenever Mirabella looked into it, would always show the reflected face of a monster to her.
"You see Mirabella", her stepmother would say to her, pointing to her reflection in the mirror, "You are an ugly monster".
In truth however, Mirabella was the most beautiful girl in the kingdom but her stepmother refused to let her leave their house.
"You are far too ugly to leave the house Mirabella", said her stepmother, "You would only scare people with your monstrous face".
And ofcourse, because Mirabella had never been outside of the house, she had never looked in any other mirror besides her stepmothers one and so didn't know she was being tricked.
As a result, Mirabella grew up with very low self esteem.
One day, however, when her stepmother was out, a prince was riding past the house of Mirabella and saw her standing near a window and, because of her radiant beauty, fell in love with her in an instant and, getting off his horse, he knocked upon her door.
But Mirabellas stepmother had told her never to open the door to anyone and so she shouted through the letterbox,
"Go away. Please. I cannot open the door".
"Then atleast tell me the name of that beautiful woman I saw at the window of your house earlier", asked the prince, "For I have fallen in love with her".
Sadly, because Mirabella had been convincedby her stepmother that she was ugly she thought that the prince must be making fun of her and so became angry, shouting at him to go away.
And so the prince stopped knocking but, instead, he climbed up to Mirabellas window and forced it open, climbing inside her room.
Startled by him, she became frightened but the prince got down on one knee and held out a rose to her.
"Please", he said, "I mean you no harm. I only wished to give you this rose because it matches your fair beauty".
Hearing this however, Mirabella thought the Prince was making fun of her again and felt so angry that she thought she would throw a pitcher of water in his face and say, "Here is water for your rose".
But as she was about to throw the water over him, Mirabella caught sight of her true reflection in the princes polished, silver breastplate.
Atfirst, upon seeing her real reflection, she looked round about her, thinking it must be the reflection of some other girl but then, when she could see no other girl in the room she realized it was her face.
"Is this my real reflection that I see in your breastplate", she asked.
"Yes", said the prince confused, "Why do you ask?".
But then Mirabella took him downstairs to the mirror in the hall and showed him how it reflected her face as that of a monster.
"But that ghastly face in the mirror is not what you really look like", said the prince, "It is some kind of witches illusion. Surely you can't believe you really look like that".
"I don't know what to believe", said Mirabella, frightened.
"Believe this then", said the Prince taking Mirabella in his arms and kissing her passionately upon the lips and when he had finished he asked, "Now would any man kiss a monster like that?"
Mirabella smiled as the sunlight of realization came bursting through the clouds of her confused mind.
"So my stepmother was decieving me. I'm not a monster", she said.
"What you are is an angel and my eyes are blessed to gaze upon your face", said the prince.
Unfortunately, however, just at that moment, Mirabellas stepmother came in through the front door of the house and, seeing the prince and her together, took out her witches wand and aimed it him.
"I'll deal with you later, Mirabella", she said, "After I've turned your handsome prince into an ugly toad".
But then, just as a beam of black magical light shot from the stepmothers wand towards the prince, he seized down the magic mirror from the wall and held it up to shield himself and the moment that the beam struck the surface of the mirror it was reflected back onto the stepmother, turn her into a tiny croaking toad instead.
"Curses!", croaked the toad, hopping away.
After that the Prince took Mirabella back to his palace and soon after they were married and lived happily ever after.
