Out Of Season

One chilly, Autumn day, Professor Brainy looked out of the window of his house and thought to himself, "I don't like the look of that. Its far too grim and miserable. If only it were Summer then it would be warm and sunny"
But then, the Professor had a good idea.
"I know", he thought, "I'll build a time machine and go back in time to when it was Summer, then I can sunbathe in my garden".
So then, Professor Brainy went into his garden shed and, after an hour of hammering and sawing, welding and screwing things together, the Professor had constructed a working time machine.
Then, sitting in the time machine and fastening his seatbelt, he set its controls for Summertime and, in a bright flash of purple, his machine disappeared, travelling through time.
When the machine reappeared however, much to Professor Brainys dismay it was not during the Summer at all but in the middle of a chilly winter when his garden was completely covered in snow.
"This isn't right at all", he said, "Something must be wrong with my machine".
And so he tried setting the controls on his time machine to the season of Spring instead.
"Yes Spring", he said, "That ought to be alright. Pretty flowers everywhere and atleast it will be sunnier than Autumn".
And, just as before, the Professors time machine disappeared in a bright purple flash.
And this time, when the time machine reappeared, it did seem like the right season because the sun was shining and the flowers were blooming.
But then, up above in the sky, the Professor saw a very large Pterodactyl with a hungry look in its eye and it was swooping down towards him screeching.
"Oh no", he said, "This is the right season alright but the wrong period in history. I've gone back to prehistoric times".
So then, before the Pterodactyl could gobble him up, the Professor set the controls for a different season.
"Well", he thought, "When I set the controls for Summer it took me to winter so, perhaps, if I set the controls for winter it will take me to Summer".
And just as before his time machine vanished in a bright purple flash.
Unfortunately however, when his machine reappeared it wasn't summer or winter or spring or autumn either but a completely different planet with 3 moons in the sky and rocketships whizzing backwards and forwards overhead and, because there was no gravity on the planet, his time machine started to float upwards.
"Oh no", he said, "All I wanted was to go back to the Summer and now I'm not even on the planet Earth".
And so, in a last desperate attempt, the Professor set the controls on his time machine to Autumn.
And, just as it had all the other times, his time machine disappeared in a purple flash.
And when it reappeared the Professor was prepared for the worst.
"I wonder where its brought me now, to the bottom of the sea? Or perhaps into the future".
But then, much to the professors relief, looking around, he realised that the time machine had just taken him back to where he had started; his garden in Autumn.
But not only that, when he looked around and saw all the trees with leaves of orange and red and gold he realised just how beautiful the Autumn was.
"Its really not that bad after all", he thought, "and, atleast there are no Pterodactyls here trying to eat me".
And so Professor Brainy put his time machine back in his garden shed and started to build something else instead; hammering and sawing and welding and screwing things together.
But this time when he reemerged from his shed all he had built was a garden chair.
Well, not just any old garden chair. It was a specially heated garden chair for keeping him nice and warm but then he just sat in it and enjoyed the Autumn in his garden and it was one of the nicest days, he thought, that he had ever spent.
