Once upon a time, a long time ago; a princess named Almonda was kidnapped by an ogre and his wife and locked in room at the top of their towerhouse in a garden of perpetual Autumn surrounded by an invisible wall.
But because it was always Autumn in the garden, the trees in the garden were always pouring down golden leaves and, sometimes, leaves would blow in through the window of the Princess's prison.
And so, one day, collecting up all the leaves, the Princess decided that she would write a message upon each of them and then scatter them to the wind in the hope that one of them, sailing upon the wind, might be carried over the invisible wall and reach the eyes of her husband, Prince Leodan
And some of the leaves didn't fly very far, infact they fell down on the floor of the garden while others blown in the wrong direction completely but one leaf landed in the nest of a kindly dove who, reading the message upon the leaf, seized hold of it in its beak and flew with it to the prince.
And the Prince took the leaf to his court magician, Cyrilin who, burning the leaf upon a magic flame conjured magic pictures out of the smoke which showed the towerhouse of the ogre and his wife and poor prince Almonda locked in her room at the top.
So then the Prince set out to rescue his princess and his magician gave him a magic ring that could make anything younger or older.
And after riding for several days, the Prince came to the towerhouse but because the garden of perpetual Autumn was surrounded by an invisible wall he couldn't enter it.
And so the prince used the magic ring to turn himself into a baby and then he started to cry.
And the wife of the ogre, hearing the baby crying came out to investigate the noise and, when she saw the baby Prince Leodan lying upon the ground, she said to herself, "A baby. Mmm, that will make a delicious meal for my ogre husband. I will take it in and cook it in my pot".
Then the ogres wife picked up the baby and, singing a cooing lullaby to it, carried it into her house before, laying it down upon her kitchen table, she started to boil her cooking pot.
As she was standing over her cooking pot, however, stirring it and adding herbs, Prince Leodan used the magic ring to turn himself back into a young man and, creeping up quietly behind the ogres wife, pushed her into her own cooking pot and, because the water in the pot was bubbling hot, the ogres wife was cooked instead of the Prince.
Then the Prince went up the spiral steps of the towerhouse to the room at the top and released the Princess.
As he was rescuing her, however, through the window of the room he saw the giant ogre coming home.
And so he used the ring to turn he and the princess into an elderly couple and, using this disguise, they walked right past the ogre.
When the ogre got back to his towerhouse, however, and realized that his wife had been boiled and the Princess was gone, he came charging out of its door, his face blazing red with anger, his mouth spitting flames and with steam bursting from his ears and then, letting out a terrible, fearsome roar, he picked up his spiky club and went stomping off into the forest.
And with his long ogre nose that could sniff out anything and his large ogre ears that could hear for miles, it wasn't long before he had tracked down the fleeing Prince and Princess.
"Rarr!", he roared waving his spiky club when he saw them, "I'll hammer you both into the ground like nails and use your heads for golf balls".
Turning, the Prince tried to use his magic ring to turn the ogre into a baby but, unfortunately, though a bolt of lightning leapt from the ring and struck the ogre on the nose, nothing else happened.
So then the Prince tried to turn the ogre into an old man but still, although a bolt of lightning leapt from the ring and struck the ogres beard, nothing else happened.
"Ha!", laughed the Ogre, "You can't use human magic against an ogre. We're made of magic".
In desperation, the prince looked round about him for some kind of weapon, a tree branch or a stone, anything to strike the ogre with but he couldn't see anything.
Just then, however, lying at the foot of a large oak tree, the Prince saw a pile of little acorns and they gave him an idea.
And he had just managed to pick up an acorn from the ground when the ogre, seizing hold of him in a ginormous, hairy claw, raised him above its head and opened it gigantic jaws wide to swallow him.
The moment that it did, however, Prince Leodan hurled the acorn that was in his hand into the ogres mouth and it fell down the ogres throat and deep into its belly.
"Ha-ha!", cackled the evil ogre, "Throwing acorns at me now are you? As if a little acorn could hurt a big ogre like me".
But then, no sooner had the ogre said this, when Prince Leodan used his magic ring to make the baby acorn grow into adult oak tree and, as it grew larger, because it was inside the ogre, it stuck out all its branches, bursting out of him and splitting the giant ogre in two.
And when the ogre was dead the Prince and Princess returned safely to their palace where they lived happily ever after.
