Once upon a time a king ordered that his daughter choose a husband to marry and, because she did not want to marry, she threw a ring off of a ship into the ocean and said, "Whoever can bring me the ring can have my hand in marriage".
Many suitors tried to get the ring, some with trawlers and fishing nets; some with weighted suits of armour that made them sink to the seabed and some even with trained dolphins but none, however hard they tried, could find the ring.
One day however, a strange young man came to the palace gates holding a ring and claiming that it was the princesses ring and, when the ring was taken before her, she confirmed that it was the one that she had thrown into the sea and so the young man was invited into the palace to see her.
When she asked him from which land he came however, the young man refused to give a straight answer. Instead he said, "I am a prince, truly, but a prince of no land".
But then, because this did not satisfy the Princess, the Prince said that, if she would travel with him in a ship then he would take her to meet his mother and father the King and Queen and so the princess agreed and, upon a galleon, they set sail.
When they were half way across the ocean however, the Prince asked the Princess come up on deck because they had arrived at his kingdom.
However, looking round about the Princess said that she couldn't see any land.
But then the Prince pushed her overboard and dived into the sea after her and when he took her hand again, they both grew fish tales and swam to the bottom of the sea and the castle of King Neptune.
"As I told you", said the Prince, "I am a prince of no land because I am prince of the sea".
Unfortunately for the Princess there was a Mermaid Princess who was very jealous of her and so she summoned a giant octopus to kidnap her and the giant octopus, wrapping its tentacles round her carried her off to its cave.
When the Prince heard what had happened however, he got onto a seahorse and picking up a net in one hand and a trident in the other galloped off to the cave of the octopus.
When the octopus saw the Prince approaching its cave it picked up eight weapons, a club, a spear, a hammer, a sword, an axe, a flail, a bow and arrows and came out to fight.
But the Prince cast his net over the octopus and pulling upon the net pulled all the weapons from its hands, then he hurled his trident at it and each of the tridents three prongs pierced one of the creatures three hearts so that, releasing a squid cloud of blood, the creature died.
Then the Prince, entering the Princess's cave rescued her and the next day, upon the seashore they were married and lived happily ever after.
